LoL Debuts Wondrous Champion Aurora Alongside Swarm PvE Mode

LoL Aurora, the Witch Between Worlds.

Recently, LoL dropped the latest champion for their games’ massive roster: Aurora the Witch Between Worlds. To many, this latest reveal was a shock. At this time of year and at this time of day? However, fans can be assured that this new entry to the lineup will be a welcome one regarding lore and gameplay. Furthermore, Riot also unveiled a new, temporary game mode. The PvE mode “Swarm” occurs within the new “Anima” continuity as players fight off hordes of invading aliens. Here is a breakdown of the new champion and game mode for those just finding out.

What is Aurora’s Moveset in LoL?

As Riot only releases a handful of champions annually, they do their best to ensure each one fits into the meta while remaining balanced. Firstly, Aurora is an AP-based midlaner, meaning most of her damage is magic-based. Her passive is “spirit abjuration,” which collects beneficial spirits when attacking enemies. Her Q shoots out a missile that can be recalled for more damage, her W lets her dash and turn invisible, and her E fires out a beam that slows enemies.

Her moveset offers high mobility and crowd control, which would be useful as a skirmisher during a team fight. Finally, her ultimate traps enemies within a certain radius. Unlike Mordekaiser’s similar ultimate, this one applies to all in the area while she can teleport across it. An ability like this will certainly be a game-changer for any team fight. As usual, many fans are speculating that the champion will be “nerfed” (her power toned down) in the coming weeks, a common trend for new champions.

What is Her Lore?

While her gameplay is fairly interesting, her lore is equally fascinating in how it fits into the larger canon. Aurora is a half-rabbit “Vastaya,” a race of half-animal spirits hailing from Ionia. She was born able to peer into the spirit world and thus left out on a quest to discover more. On her mission, she crossed paths with fellow spirit-walker Udyr and befriended the demigod Ornn, both champions. Ornn himself forged the very wand she uses in battle. Her story ends with her off to investigate the elk-spirit, Hestrelk.

League of Legends has always had its lore in constant flux and retcons. Over the past decade, the game has gone through a “Ship of Theseus” numerous times as new characters were added or completely rewritten. As such, it’s unknown how this latest champion will change in the coming years. Finally, Aurora is voiced by the talented newcomer Emeri Chase.

What is Swarm PvE?

While this latest champion is a cause for celebration, Riot added new additions to the game to excite fans, such as the new Player vs Enemy mode, “Swarm.” Swarm is a temporary game mode added to promote their new line of skins, Anima Squad. In this mode, players choose one of the champions with Anima Squad skins (Aurora included) and fight waves of enemies. The gameplay is a fair departure from the baseline game, now using WASD controls and modifying the champions’ abilities to better fit into the new mode. Players now fight through linear levels and even go against boss battles.

This would not be the first time Riot added temporary game modes, which they have done before with the Star Guardian and Project lines of skins. While it is tragic that this game mode is only temporary, that is what makes these new modes so fun and special. They shake up players’ expectations and give them a break from the strict metas and tactics of this legendary esport. League of Legends is not just one game mode but an entire franchise of sub-games, animated series, and its community.
