The Los Angeles Guerrillas struggled mightily against the Vegas Legion in their opening Call of Duty League Major III qualifying match. They stuck around in the Hardpoint but then looked outmatched in the other maps. Things weren’t going to get any easier with a day two matchup against the Toronto Ultra. It was more of the same for the Guerrillas, who sit in a 0-2 hole after the first two days of qualifying.

In the opening Hardpoint, they held Ultra’s Envoy to a 9/26 stat line. However, Insight and CleanX went off. Insight had an insane 31/22 stat line with 28 untraded kills. CleanX had a game-high 39 kills. None of the Los Angeles Guerrillas played extremely poorly, but mediocrity doesn’t get you very far in the CDL. The mediocre play continued in the Search And Destroy round. All of the players were around a 1:1 kill/death ratio. While this isn’t bad, it isn’t good enough to beat a team like the Toronto Ultra.
Everyone went negative for the Guerrillas in the Control round. It was simply too easy for the Toronto Ultra. The gap between those two teams is enormous. If the finals were to begin today, these two teams would play in the opening round. This match does not give any confidence that the Los Angeles Guerrillas could pull off the upset.
What Do The Los Angeles Guerrilas Do?
The pressure is on the team to recover next weekend. One could argue the opening weekend was an unlucky schedule. Vegas is one of the better teams in the Call of Duty League. Then, following that match-up with the Toronto Ultra less than 24 hours later is brutal. There are five more matches in this qualifying cycle. Three of them are against teams lower than them in the standings. They will need to look strong against the Royal Ravens, Breach, and the Heretics.
If the Los Angeles Guerrillas struggle against those teams and end up in the losers bracket for Major III, we could see some changes to the roster. They haven’t had a bad season by any means. The goal is always to make it to championship weekend. If they are going to hang onto their spot, the team needs to play better overall. Mediocrity isn’t an option in the CDL.
