Known as the “Demon of Vyrantium,” and “The Mage Killer,” Lucanis Dellamorte is one of those companions everyone seems to be talking about -when it comes to Dragon Age the Veilguard. With his mysterious past, and the rumor surrounding his seemingly confirmed death, the master assassin of the Antivan Crow’s current whereabouts has been overshadowed by uncertainty for years. His story had already come to a close in the minds of many yet it seems the devs at Bioware were not quite done with the rogue just yet.
History
Lucanis Dellamorte is the composed and pragmatic grandson of the First Talon of the Antivan Crows, Caterina Dellamorte. Known as a strict and no-nonsense leader, Caterina raised and trained Lucanis under harsh discipline and teachings -often correcting his behavior by force rather than with words.
Alongside his cousin, Illario, Lucanis excelled under his grandmother’s tutelage; and eventually became one of the guild’s most notorious assassins, earning the moniker of the “Mage-Killer” for his efficiency in dealing with rogue magic users.
Personality
Described by the developers as a “bisexual disaster,” little is known about Lucanis Dellamorte’s personality before Veilguard. His introduction into the Dragon Age zeitgeist began with his appearance in The Wigmaker Job, a short story from the 2020 anthology novel, Tevinter Nights. Wherein: the fans get a sense that Lucanis is more than what his deadly reputation makes him out to be.
His actions during the mission were to kill the eponymous wigmaker and known Venatori Blood Mage, Ambrose Forfex. Readers witness his sense of justice and fairness that seems completely out of place, for a master assassin by trade.
Instead of steam-rolling headfirst toward the elimination of his target, Lucanis shows empathy and understanding to the people enslaved under Ambrose’s control and is enraged when he finds out just how monstrous the blood mage has been towards them.
Further gruesome findings, within the mage’s lair, only incense him further; leading to a deadly confrontation wherein Ambrose turns into a Red Lyrium-infused abomination and is eventually destroyed. With the mission complete, Lucanis and Illario leave the cursed city of Vyrantium – not knowing of the enemy he has now made in Zara Renata, a Magister and vindictive member of the Venatori.
The Wake
Released on December 4, 2020, on Dragon Age Day, The Wake short story picks up sometime after the conclusion of the Wigmaker Job. Wherein Viago De Riva and Teia Cantori; two friends of Lucanis and fellow Crows; look after a grieving Illario.
As he drunkenly reminisces about his life and times spent with Lucanis, talking about the time when Lucanis was so obsessed with wyverns that he wanted to hunt one; the readers vaguely learn that the Demon of Vyrantium has died. No more details are given, leaving what happened to Lucanis a mystery.
Veilguard
What became of Lucanis, how he managed to survive, where he’s been, and who conspired to make the Crows believe he was dead, are all questions expected to be answered in Dragon Age: the Veilguard. While some spoilers have been released; Bioware has yet to reveal Lucanis’ full story. Giving fans ample time to pick up the game and prepare for what is sure to be an interesting storyline full of twists, turns, and evil machinations just waiting to be uncovered and thwarted.
