With four days of gaming action, the Play-In Stage of the 2024 League of Legends World Championships has come to a close with MAD Lions KOI, GAM Esports, paiN Gaming, and PSG Talon moving ahead to face off against the world’s best teams in the Swiss Stage.
Opening Round Worlds Action
Spain’s MAD Lions Koi proved that they came to Worlds to play with a decisive 2-0 victory over Viking Esports of Vietnam in the opening round on September 25. PSG Talon, a favorite from the Pacific region, managed to edge out paiN Gaming with a 2-1 win, setting the tone for what would be a rollercoaster week.
On the second day of Worlds play Thursday, Vietnam’s GAM Esports struck fast and hard, defeating Japan’s Fukuoka SoftBank HAWKS Gaming 2-0. California-based 100 Thieves held out, but eventually lost 1-2 in a tight three-game series against Mexico’s Movistar R7.
The Battle Intensifies
By Friday, the stakes were higher as teams fought to stay in the League of Legends championships. MAD Lions KOI continued their dominant run, defeating PSG Talon 2-1. Meanwhile, GAM Esports displayed superior strategy and mechanics to take down Movistar R7 with another 2-0 Worlds performance.
MAD Lions KOI and GAM Esports both qualified for the Worlds Swiss Stage with these victories. Fans of GAM Esports had even more to celebrate as team captain Levi notched 106 kills, making him officially the first Vietnamese player to reach 100 knockouts in CKTG periods.
Eliminations and Final Standings
In the elimination bracket on September 28, Vikings Esports lost 0-2 to paiN Gaming. Later in the day, 100 Thieves rebounded with a 2-0 sweep over Fukuoka SoftBank HAWKS Gaming. With their losses, Vikings Esports and Fukuoka SoftBank HAWKS Gaming were both eliminated from Worlds.
The final day of the Play-In Stage featured paiN Gaming overcoming Movistar R7 in a close 2-1 match, and PSG Talon eliminating 100 Thieves with a commanding 2-0 victory. With these victories, paiN Gaming and PSG Talon advanced to the Swiss stage. Suffering their second losses, Movistar R7 and 100 Thieves were knocked out of the League of Legends tournament.
Swiss Stage Brackets Set
The Swiss Stage draw for the 2024 Worlds took place right after the 100 Thieves vs PSG Talon game. With the top 16 teams now divided into pools, they are set to clash in a series of best-of-one (Bo1) matchups on October 3.

Worlds Sweet Sixteen Breakdown
The Sweet Sixteen is then divided into four brackets based on seeding and regional play. Pool 1 consists of the first place teams from the major regions that won their qualifying tournaments and Pool 2 consists of the second place teams and other teams that qualified through Championship Points. Pool 3 is composed of the winners and runner-ups of the regional finals for LPL and LCK. Pool 4 features the four esports teams who just proved themselves during the Worlds Play-In Stage.
