Created in 1993 by Richard Garfield, and released by Wizards of the Coast, Magic The Gathering is one of the most successful trading card games ever created. For a new player, building your own deck can be a daunting challenge. Luckily, Wizards of the Coast regularly releases pre-built decks for new players to use.
What Is a Starter Deck?
In Magic and other card games, a starter deck is a pre-built set of cards that can be used to play right out of the box. These decks often follow a single theme or are built around a specific character. Most of the starter decks released for Magic are Commander decks, a format that uses 100 cards and allows for multiplayer games.
How Should I Pick a Starter Deck
When picking a starter deck, think about what decks your friends will be playing. It can be boring to play the same deck as your opponents, so pick something that seems different. If you are hoping to have a powerful Magic deck that doesn’t need any upgrades, your best bet may be picking a commander deck from Modern Horizons 3. MH3 is the most powerful set released this year, so the cards it adds will be sure to make an impact at the game table. MH3 added 4 commander decks, the pros and cons of each will be discussed here.
Graveyard Overdrive
This is a Black-Red-Green deck that focuses on filling your graveyard quickly. The Commander of the deck is “Disa the Restless”, a powerful threat that can summon Lhurgoyfs quickly and easily. Lhurgoyfs are classic Magic monsters, which gain power when there are more cards in the graveyard. With Disa on the field, this deck will quickly swarm your opponents with ever-growing monsters.
If you enjoy reviving monsters from the graveyard, getting powerful creatures, and looking at cool monsters, this may be the starter deck for you.
Tricky Terrain
This is a Blue-Green deck that quickly accumulates mana to cast powerful spells. The Commander of this deck is “Omo, Queen of Vesuva”, a shapeshifter that can make your lands and creatures act as any type of land or creature. This allows you to stack up mana higher and higher, to cast spells that gain power the more mana is used on them.
If you enjoy explosive growth, land manipulation, and massive beasts, this is the deck for you.
Eldrazi Incursion
This is a five-color deck that duplicates the spells you cast. It focuses on Eldrazi, fan-favorite lovecraftian monsters that corrupt and demolish the world. The Commander is “Ulalek, Fused Atrocity”, an eldrazi that copies the spells you cast and the abilities of creatures you control. Ulalek allows you to effectively double the spells you cast, overwhelming your opponents with a massive advantage.
If you want to be the main enemy of the table, this is the deck for you.
Creative Energy
This is a Red-Blue-White deck that stacks up Energy Counters and makes token copies of your creatures. The Commander is “Satya, Aetherflux Genius”, an artificer that provides a steady flow of counters and tokens. This deck is built to give you plenty of Energy Counters, and an array of useful outlets to spend them. At the higher ends, this will let you cast spells for free and flood the board with copies of your creatures.
If you like making tokens, collecting energy, and keeping a full board, this deck might be the right choice.
In Conclusion
There are plenty of great choices for Magic decks. These four are certainly not the only choices, but they are sure to make for some fun games. Consider talking with your friends about what they play, and what decks they would recommend for you to play.
