5 Super Mario Remakes That Should Follow Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

The Mario remakes have been steady this year. With the Nintendo Switch slowly reaching the end of its life cycle, Nintendo has remade Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Luigi’s Mansion 2. The next Nintendo Direct may confirm a few more that are on the way. Either way, there is a vast library of Super Mario, Paper Mario, and more that could be brought to modern audiences.

Mario remakes are almost foolproof for Nintendo as well. Even the most drastic of them don’t require as much development as a new game and they’re easy to sell. Everyone who loved the game originally will want to experience it again. Everyone who didn’t now has the chance to. If that’s the immediate future for Nintendo, here’s what needs to be remade.

Mario Remakes We Need

5) Mario Hoops 3-on-3

There have been plenty of Mario sports games that need to come back, but one in particular has been lost to the annals of history: Mario Hoops 3-on-3. This basketball game was made in conjunction with Square Enix, which might make it harder to bring back. Nevertheless, the gameplay was excellent and it remains one of the most fun sports games out there. Remaking it for a non-DS console might be a challenge, though.

4) Super Mario Bros. 3

Super Mario Bros. 3 is an all-time classic. It is and has always been readily available with the virtual console or Switch Online, but it’s high time it got a remake. The power-ups in that game remain some of the best in the entire side-scrolling genre for Mario. Being able to fly in the Tanooki suit with modernized graphics would be incredible.

3) New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Speaking of excellent power-ups, the Helicopter suit is another great one. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a fantastic game that cemented Mario as a great multiplayer option. It is one of the most difficult games to play in 2024 unless one has a Nintendo Wii and the game, so the inaccessibility necessitates it being one of the next Mario remakes.

2) Super Mario Galaxy 2

Of all the 3D games, Super Mario Galaxy 2 has to be one of the next Mario remakes. Of the mainline 3D games, it is the only one not currently playable on the Nintendo Switch. 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy all got ported with the 3D All-Stars released in 2020. Super Mario 3D Land got a Switch release as well. All that’s left is Super Mario Galaxy 2, widely considered a phenomenal game.

1) Yoshi’s Island

Far too many people don’t know about the epic tale of Yoshi and Baby Mario told in Yoshi’s Island or Super Mario World 2. It remains the best side-scroller in the Mario franchise and hasn’t been remade since it landed on the GameBoy Advance in 2002. It is well past time to remake one of the greatest games of all time for the Nintendo Switch.
