New Marvel vs Capcom Desired by Series Producer

Marvel vs Capcom is a legendary crossover fighting game series that has been relatively dormant. That is, until recently. Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection. This fighting game collection just came out and holds every single game in the franchise that wasn’t available on modern platforms. The best part is what the series producer recently said about bringing the series back.

Marvel vs Capcom’s Producer

Marvel vs Capcom’s series producer, Shuhei Matsumoto spoke to ComicBook, a pop culture news outlet about the future of the series. Matsumoto was asked by ComicBook about the potential of a new entry in this series. This has been a hot-button topic ever since 2017, with the release of the incredibly disappointing Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. Infinite is notorious for having ugly visuals, a poorly designed HUD and user interface, an embarrassing story mode, and an incredibly lacking roster. All of these elements are usually slam dunks in this series, which made Infinite’s failure even more shocking.

On the possibility of a new Marvel vs Capcom game, Matsumoto said “Who wouldn’t want to release a new installment of the series? At least our team and I have the desire to release one… While commercial achievement may be one factor, I personally think that is merely transitory. I think the fans who continue to cheer us on and show their support for the series are more powerful. This is especially the case since this is a project that can’t be realized by Capcom alone.” (ComicBook). This is incredibly exciting for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, Capcom and Marvel are finally talking and in the works again.

These fighting games are crossovers. So the legal loopholes both developers needed to jump through have changed quite a lot. In the 90s and early 2000s, it was much easier for them to make these games. The movies weren’t as big and popular as they are now, and it was just a different time. In the 90s, Spider-Man and the X-Men were the most popular Marvel characters. Now? That roster has grown to a colossal list of Avengers, Guardians, and other super-powered heroes. Back in the 90s, Marvel was close to bankruptcy, so they were much more lenient with throwing their characters around.

The tension between the two companies existed ever since 2011, with the making of Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. There were some characters that almost didn’t make it in, like Sentinel and Akuma, that certain higher-ups at Capcom had to beg Marvel to let in the game. At the end of the day, these games are collaborations. And while Capcom is an incredibly popular company, Marvel is owned by Disney nowadays, and Disney is loaded. That’s one of the many reasons why Marvel vs Capcom Infinite failed. There were too many cooks in the kitchen that kept swaying the development of that game.

Capcom is “Ecstatic” for an MvC4

Lastly, Matsumoto claimed that he and the Capcom vs team were “ecstatic” to collaborate with Marvel again for this new collection (ComicBook). This is a great sign again. Matsumoto is not-so-subtly telling the fans that yes, Capcom obviously wants a new game in the series. It’s just up to Marvel to give them the green light. And honestly, that makes a ton of sense. That has pretty much been the norm for this series since the turn of the millennium.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 came out in 2000, and then eleven years later we got MvC3. It’s insane that the turnaround was over a decade, but that’s how these games get made, unfortunately. All the fans can do is support this new collection, and tell Marvel how badly a fourth installment is needed for the series. Who knows, if enough press is drummed up, a Marvel vs Capcom 4 could be a reality.
