The Collegiate Rocket League is underway with the first open tournament now complete and Maryville University jumping out to a lead in the points total. Here’s what we know about the competition.
Field Crowded on Day 1
The first day of play in the 2024 Collegiate Rocket League saw 32 teams divided into four pools of eight teams. Pool One’s qualifiers were reigning champs Northwood University Blue, who emerged undefeated, and Davenport University Black, who advanced through the lower bracket with a 2-1 record. Pool Two’s undefeated team was Concord University. Fisher College’s Navy team earned a qualifying spot through the lower bracket with victories including a 2-0 win over their schoolmates on Fisher College’s White team.
Over in Pool Three, it was Maryville University in the top spot with the University of Akron’s Blue team securing the lower bracket qualifier. Pool Four saw West Virginia claim the upper bracket slot with Ball State securing the qualification through the lower bracket.
Day 2 Early Rounds
The second day of play began with matches in the lower bracket. Davenport edged out Ball State 3- 2 in best of five play. Fisher and Akron also needed five games to determine a winner, with Fisher eventually claiming victory and advancing to the next round.
Matches in the upper bracket were not as even, with both first-round matches being decided in four games. Northwood edged West Virginia 3-1 before Maryville topped Concord University by the same margin
Lower Bracket Quarter Finals
Following their loss to Maryville, Concord entered the lower bracket quarter-final round determined to fight off elimination. Facing Davenport, the team notched a victory in three matches, outplaying their foes 3-1.
West Virginia wasn’t as lucky in the lower bracket. Facing off against the Fisher Navy team, the Mountaineers fell 3-1 and were eliminated from the tournament. Fisher Navy would strike again in the lower bracket semifinal round, defeating Concord 3-2.
Maryville Wins in the Finals
In the upper bracket finals it was Maryville all the way as they handed Northwood a 3-0 defeat, sending the team to the lower bracket where they would have to face off against a very hungry Fisher Navy. Fisher’s hopes of eliminating yet another team were dashed, however, with Northwood claiming a 3-1 victory and setting up a rematch with Maryville.
Maryville wasn’t able to handle Northwood as easily in the grand finale and the Timberwolves scored a crucial 4-1 victory. As a result of the round, both Maryville and Northwood had one loss on the day, setting up a second round of play. This time Maryville returned to form with the team defeating Northwood 4-1 to take the crown.
More to Come
By taking the top sport, Maryville claimed $1,500 in prize money and 16 points. Northwood won $1,200 and 12 points, with Fisher Navy getting $1,100 and 9 points and Concord receiving $900 and 6 points.
The Fall Championship will feature the top eight points earning teams competing in a Single Elimination Bracket over two days to determine the Collegiate Rocket League Fall Champion. That tournament is scheduled for November 16 and 17.
