While the next Mass Effect game is still most likely years away, gamers won’t have to wait long to play a new entry in the Mass Effect franchise. Instead of playing it on PCs or consoles, gamers will need to have a table cleaned off because the next entry is a Mass Effect board game called Mass Effect: Priority Hagalaz. Taking place during Mass Effect Three, Mass Effect: Priority Hagalaz will see one through four players explore a downed Cerebrus vessel as Shepard and their companions.
Mass Effect The Board Game

Back in late March of this year, Modiphius announced that they were going to publish Mass Effect the Board Game: Priority Hagalaz. For those who haven’t heard of Modiphius before, they’re a board game and TTRPG publisher that has published the Fallout TTRPG, the Dishonored TTRPG, and the Skyrim Adventure Game among many other projects. On Friday, August 23rd, Modiphius posted an announcement on their site that the Mass Effect board game would be launching in October 2024.
Besides the release date, Modiphius also went into detail about the board game itself. The enemies of the board game will be represented by illustrated card tokens, there will also be multipart resin miniatures that players can purchase as well, so make sure you have some superglue handy. The miniatures will be released in phases with the first phase being ‘The Heroes of the Normandy Alpha’. The six minis of the first phase which will be in pre-assembled plastic are Commander Shepard, Garrus Vakarian, Liara T’soni, Tali, and Wrex.
Commander Shepard who can be either male or female in the Mass Effect games will also have their male and female versions in the board game. Besides being able to choose Shepard’s gender, players can also choose Shepard’s loadout such as using the M-8 Assault Rifle or the M-3 Pistol and Omni-Blade. For all the helmet or no-helmet Mass Effect players out there, you can also choose a helmet or helmetless variant for Commander Shepard.
Narrative Board Game
One of the best things the Mass Effect trilogy is known for is its branching narrative which allows players to make decisions that not only affect the game they’re playing but also affect the sequels. One such example is in Mass Effect Two, if Shepard talked Wrex down on Vimire in Mass Effect One, Wrex is a powerful clan leader in the second game. If Shepard however killed Wrex on Virmire, Wrex’s violent and less charismatic brother Wreav is the clan leader instead.
The creators of the Mass Effect board game Eric M. Lang and Calvin Wong Tze Loon took the branching narrative into account when designing the board game. The Mass Effect trilogy is a set of games that are meant to be replayed so players can see more than one set of choices. The designers have also made that a priority when creating Mass Effect the Board Game: Priority Hagalaz. If the name Hagalaz sounds familiar, that’s because it’s where the former Shadow Broker hides out before Liara and Shepard go and confront them in the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC.
October Is Bioware Month
Besides Mass Effect the Board Game: Priority Hagalaz, the Bioware-developed and soon-to-be-released Dragon Age: The Veilguard RPG will also be launching in October or more specifically at the end of October on Halloween. Dragon Age: The Veilguard which is the fourth entry in Electronic Art’s and Bioware’s Dragon Age series will see the PC known as Rook as they try and stop Solas AKA The Dreadwolf from re-opening the Veil.
Solas who was a former companion in Dragon Age: Inquisition will now serve as the antagonist for Dragon Age: The Veilguard which was foreshadowed in Inquisition’s Trespasser DLC. Dragon Age: The Veilguard went through many iterations of development over the past 10 years and at one point was being developed with a live service component. Luckily, that was removed, and instead Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be a 100% single-player RPG. If you want to be kept up to date about the Mass Effect board game, you can sign up for news here.
