Both video game fans and casual enthusiasts alike know of Sonic the Hedgehog and his trademark lightning-fast speed. Whether through the hundreds of games or the handful of shows and movies, his adventures have entertained audiences for decades. However, there are many characters in the Sonicverse that many do not know. These include the tough and hulking echidna Knuckles, the cunning and practical bat Rouge, and the docile and benevolent rabbit Cream the Rabbit.
How does Team Sonic Meet Cream the Rabbit?
Making her official debut in Sonic Advance 2 on the Game Boy Advance, the beloved blue hedgehog runs into Cream the Rabbit after the player completes a level in Green Hill Zone. Cream the Rabbit is held captive by Dr. Eggman inside his latest contraption, a technologically advanced motorbike with a mechanical arm in a tight grip and a retractable metal mallet.
Once Sonic defeats Eggman and releases Cream the Rabbit from the mad scientist’s grasp, Cream the Rabbit explains to him that she has to rescue her mother. Although she’s often characterized by her meekness and mild-mannered behavior, she still has moments of courage at just 4-5 years old. Towards the end of Sonic Advance 2, we get a conclusion to Cream the Rabbit’s story. As the newest member of the team, Cream the Rabbit leads Tails, Knuckles, and the others to where her mother was just as she is kidnapped and gets pulled through a portal.
Sonic, now equipped with all seven chaos emeralds, becomes Super Sonic (similar to Dragon Ball’s Super Saiyan transformation) in which all of Sonic changes from blue to a bright golden hue. Equipped with faster speed, more strength, and the ability to fly, Sonic catches up to the machine holding Vanilla -Cream the Rabbit’s mother- and dismantles it. As the game concludes, we see that Vanilla begins tumbling quickly back into Earth’s atmosphere and Sonic speeds to catch her in time. Cream embraces Vanilla tearfully.
Cream the Rabbit’s Powerset and Abilities
Similar to Tails, Cream the Rabbit can fly using her ears to travel over great distances. In a rare feat, Cream the Rabbit’s flight allows her to keep up with Sonic himself as evidenced in the sidequest Cream: Helping Hand in Sonic Generations. While less of a fighter compared to her teammates, the 2-foot rabbit is capable of holding her own when needed. One of her go-to “attacks” is the homing attack that all teammates do which involves curling into a ball and launching at her target. She also can involve her faithful companion Cheese as a weapon to deal with whatever is in her path.
Cheese is Cream the Rabbit’s close companion and friend as the two are often seen with one another. They are a creature called a Chao, very diminutive but scrappy where needed. Cheese can also fly and perform rushing attacks on behalf of Cream the Rabbit to protect her. Cheese can instantaneously form a twister to subdue her enemies.
As a rabbit, she’s also able to use a hopping attack and a hopping-running combination while traversing terrain which allows her to evade incoming attacks and travel faster. One of her last abilities may sound cheesy but will fare her well if in a tough conflict; due to her pure overall goodness, Cream the Rabbit can heal herself while in a fight.
Can We Expect to See Cream the Rabbit in Sonic 3?
The aforementioned live-action Sonic films were received favorably by both critics and fans alike. It was in due part to the far superior visual effects than what was showcased in the original trailer. The other factors were the unhinged comedic talents of Jim Carrey, a script that imbues the character and world of the Sonic franchise, and a cast well suited to fit all of the major roles.
At the end of the first film, audiences were teased with the appearance of Tails. The second film introduced Knuckles(Idris Elba) and Tails(Colleen O’Shaughnessey) with the end credits of that film teasing Shadow the Hedgehog’s appearance which is now revealed to be voiced by John Wick himself- Keanu Reeves. The legendary Canadian actor will surely be in good company joining Elba, O’Shaughnessey, and Ben Schwartz for the film set to be released just in time for the Christmas season on December 20, 2024.
Given the series’ tradition of dropping more than one Team Sonic member in their films, there’s a good chance Cream the Rabbit, Rouge, and many other characters may make their blockbuster debut. It would be a perfect opportunity to widen the universe of the films even more. Paramount Plus recently dropped a Knuckles miniseries on their platform. There could be a Cream the Rabbit miniseries to follow it up if fans grow to love her character.
