He’s become a widespread franchise icon, well-known as one of its most popular assets. Since his debut, he has made plenty of appearances in later titles. Mewtwo was created by Mr. Fuji, an NPC who lives in Lavender Town, located in the Kanto region. He’s a clone made using leftover DNA from the Mythical Pokémon Mew. Mr. Fuji wanted to make the most powerful Pokémon in history. He held this experiment in the Pokémon Mansion, located on Cinnabar Island. Eventually, the Pokémon would break free and destroy the Mansion. Many of these details are recounted in lost Journals within the Pokémon Mansion. Overall, Mewtwo’s backstory provides one of the most complex depictions of a Pokémon character. It sets up the tragic and upsetting implications of his origins.
The most common element of Mewtwo’s character is his hatred of humanity. This is best displayed in Mewtwo Strikes Back, the first Pokémon movie. Throughout the film, the character has a cruel and detached expression towards humans. This ties back to the despicable experiments that make him who he is. He hates humans because they perceive him as a weapon. Naturally, this belief contributes to their growing disdain for humans. For example, Mewtwo uses telepathy to communicate with humans in the film. He can use his telekinesis to push people around. With his immense psychic gifts, he is one of the most deadly psychics of the Pokémon franchise. His power might only be second to his progenitor, Mew.
The Pokémon’s abilities continue to grow in later media. For example, they were one of many past Pokémon gifted with a Mega Evolution. This powerful gimmick lets you transform prior Pokémon to make them stronger. Mewtwo has two Mega Evolutions, both depending on which version you have. Simply Iconic!
In many ways, I think Mewtwo encapsulates what people enjoy about Pokémon. He’s a flashy, explosive character whose abilities feel so alien compared to what Pokémon usually represents. The Pokémon’s abilities are part of the reason why people enjoy him. He is an alien-like character with such a complex personality, something that feels unheard of compared to even Meowth. He’s one of the franchise’s strongest Pokémon, and he perfectly demonstrates it. Their reputation feels earned, and I doubt there is anything that will take it away from him.
