Konami has officially announced the development of a new Metal Gear Solid 3 remake under the title, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, or simply MGS: Delta. The new remaster will see the classic PS2 installment equipped with modern graphics and controls. So, how soon can we see the release of the game? What are Konami’s plans for the franchise? Will there be any future Metal Gear stories despite Kojima’s departure from the company? We have all these answers and more as we explore the upcoming timeline for MGS: Delta.
A Classic Journey Revived

It’s no secret that the Metal Gear franchise is a beloved universe among fans. The series spans a five-and-a-half decade-long timeline within an impressive 11 games total. Of course, some folks question the canon of titles like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance but that’s a topic for another article. MGS 3: Snake Eater was released in 2004 as a prequel to the first two MGS games. Instead of controlling Solid Snake himself or Sons of Liberty protagonist, Raiden, MGS 3 plays from the perspective of Naked Snake (aka Big Boss). Solid Snake, the protagonist of nearly all other MGS games, is canonically a clone of the original Big Boss.
MGS 3 is set during the Cold War in 1964, solidifying itself as the earliest game in the timeline. We’re treated to the history of the Metal Gear universe via a series of stealth missions and battles within a Soviet Union tropical forest. While MGS 1 and 2 took place primarily in industrial facilities, the historical forest landscape was an interesting change of pace. MGS 3 implemented new gameplay features like camouflage, CQC (close-quarters combat), a way to treat injuries, and a stealth gauge. The original MGS 3 for the PlayStation 2 was released to critical acclaim and is often cited as a favorite among Metal Gear fans.
The Legacy Continues
In 2023, Konami announced the development of MGS: Delta during the May PlayStation Showcase. Since then, no clear release timeline has been established. The announcement left fans excited, yet puzzled, as Metal Gear creator, Hideo Kojima part ways with Konami in 2015. Although MGS: Delta is a remake and not a brand new story within the franchise, some fans feel that adding to the Metal Gear name without the inclusion of Kojima is a step in the wrong direction. It is speculated that future installments may bring the iconic developer back to the driver’s seat if the Metal Gear universe is meant to expand beyond legacy content, but only time will tell.
Recently, gameplay demos have surfaced online, with a handful of lucky playtesters describing their experience with MGS: Delta so far. Associates from the YouTube channel, VGC, reported that they had played the 90-minute demo of the remake and they had quite a bit to say. MGS: Delta is a faithful remake of the story right down to the dialogue that didn’t age particularly well. With the addition of a disclaimer, all of the original dialogue is kept in the new game. Aside from this, they explain that Delta plays like MGS 5 while looking like a PS5 game. Essentially, it’s exactly what they wanted in a remake.
Although Konami still hasn’t announced a specific release date for the title, another lucky play tester and PlayStation blogger, Corey Brotherson, stated that the game would be released some time within 2024. With September on the horizon, that leaves only four months for Konami to make a decision on the future of MGS: Delta. Producers on the game say that a mix of veteran developers who worked on the 2004 title and new talent with unique skillsets of their own have come together to build the game. From the player’s point of view, it appears that a lot of care has gone into making MGS: Delta a faithful and memorable remake.
