One of the cutest animals to recently be added to Minecraft is the humble armadillo. Armadillos won the Mob Vote at Minecraft Live 2023 and were added to the game on December 18th, 2023. They have quickly become a fan favorite for their cute appearance and useful drops.
Where Can I Find An Armadillo?
In Minecraft, armadillos spawn in warm biomes in the overworld. You cannot find an Armadillo in the Nether, or in the End. Armadillos will appear in badlands and savanna biomes, which can be identified by their orange stone and dark green grass, respectively. Armadillos in Minecraft can take one of two forms, rolled and unrolled. The unrolled armadillo looks the way you would expect an armadillo to but is made more blocky to fit with Minecraft’s square aesthetic. In the rolled-up form, armadillos become cubes. In real life, a rolled-up armadillo is a sphere, but Minecraft usually renders spherical objects as cubes on the overworld.
What Can I Use An Armadillo For?
Armadillos can be attached to leads, to move them from one place to another or confine them to a single area. By attaching a lead to a fencepost, you can keep your favorite armadillo nearby. This is useful because, in Minecraft, armadillos will scare off the giant spiders that terrorize the nighttime. To make sure your armadillo doesn’t despawn, consider using a nametag on it to keep it around when chunks of the world reload.
Armadillo Scutes
The main use for an armadillo is harvesting scutes. In the real world, scutes are hardened sections of bone or skin. In Minecraft, you can harvest these scutes without killing the armadillo. Mojang‘s official stance is that the player should not kill wild animals, other than the farm animals that roam the overworld. Players can harvest scutes from an armadillo by using a brush on it. Brushes can be crafted from a stick, a feather, and a copper ingot. There is no limit to the amount of scutes that can be harvested from a single armadillo.
Wolf Armor
With five scutes, the player can craft wolf armor. Wolf armor is a useful item that can be equipped for a tamed wolf. While armored, a wolf will not take damage from most attacks. Instead, the armor will lose durability until it is destroyed, at which point the wolf can take damage again. This armor can be dyed in different colors if the player wants to distinguish between multiple tamed wolves.
How Can I Get More Armadillos?
In Minecraft, most mobs can be enticed to breed through the use of specific items. The armadillos of Minecraft will react to being fed spider eyes, going into a state where they emit heart effects. If two armadillos in this state are close enough, they will produce a baby armadillo. This baby can be rapidly aged by feeding it additional spider eyes.
Spider eyes can be obtained as a drop when killing any spider. This includes the normal overworld spiders, as well as the venomous cave spiders that can be found underground. On rare occasions, you may also be able to find spider eyes in underground chests.
