Minecraft Devs Retire Controversial Mob Vote After 7 Years

With over 300 million copies sold worldwide (excluding cracked and pirated copies), Minecraft is one of the most popular video games ever. This sandbox survival game has found a place in millions of people’s hearts. However, with a title this large, controversy is bound to appear. Most of the community has a love-hate relationship with the Minecraft Mob Vote due to its controversial past. Boycotts have been held across multiple social media platforms to combat this event, but why is that?

What Is The Mob Vote?

The Minecraft Mob Vote is a vote hosted annually to decide what the next mob added to Minecraft will be. The event takes place before and during Minecraft Live with polls scattered across various platforms such as Twitter/X, the official Minecraft website, and more. The vote normally consists of three new mob concepts. In 2023, the vote was between the Crab, the Penguin, and the Armadillo, with the latter accumulating the most community votes. The addition of the Armadillo included the Armadillo Scute item, which can be crafted into armor for your beloved Wolf pet. With this, more emphasis was placed on the Wolf, and in the update ‘Armored Paws’, new Wolf varieties were added to the game.

The Controversial History

To many, the Mob Vote is more than just adding a new mob to the game. It builds upon Minecraft’s character and implements new features that blend into the existing content in the game. The Armadillo was well-received due to the new life it brought to Wolves, but past vote winners were not as lucky. The first Mob Vote happened in 2017 and was between the Barnacle, the Great Hunger, the Wildfire, and the Phantom. Ultimately, the Phantom took the prize in this first-ever Mob Vote and was implemented into the game shortly after. This hostile mob quickly became heavily disliked by players due to its annoying gameplay mechanics.

In 2018, the Mob Vote was locked to the Chinese version of the game in favor of having a Biome Vote. This vote brought the Giant Panda into the game, although at first, it was region-locked to China. 2019 did not have a Mob Vote. In 2020, it returned internationally once again with the Mooshroom, the Iceologer, and the Glow Squid. At the time, popular content creators such as Dream and MrBeast endorsed the Glow Squid heavily. This overturned the vote and the Glow Squid won to the dismay of everyday fans of the game. Not only did this event leave a mark on Dream’s legacy, but it also soured the Mob Vote for many across the globe.

The Future Of Minecraft

Recent votes have had a better reception by the community, but there is still a stain left on the event’s legacy. Content creators seemed to have learned their lesson when it comes to endorsing a specific mob and the backlash it will bring. However, even with the upturn of the vote, fans have still repeatedly called for the Mob Vote to change. Players consistently call for all three mobs to be added or for past vote losers to be brought back. In an official post by Mojang, they announced they will be changing the format of Minecraft Live. They will separate the live stream into two separate, more focused streams. They will also be officially retiring the Mob Vote.
