Minecraft Needs These New Biomes In 2024

Minecraft is one of the most popular video games of all time. Its blocky aesthetic and simple, yet challenging, gameplay is enough to draw in old and new players alike. In Minecraft, your task is to survive and create in a world where monsters lurk in the dark. One of Minecraft‘s key features, its natural biomes, is one of the hottest talking points within the community. New biomes added to Minecraft tend to overshadow the older ones with their modern features and design characteristics. Each new biome added to the game in recent years sports a unique mob, tree type, and new blocks. Older biomes like the Desert, Badlands, Savanna, and the Birch Forest are all due for overhauls.

The Desert Biome Rework

The Desert, encompassing both the traditional desert and the Badlands biome, is the group of biomes that needs an overhaul the most out of all the biomes in Minecraft. In the 1.20 ‘Trails and Tales’ update, the Camel mob was added to Desert Villages. However, this hardly counts as an update to the biome. During 2018’s Biome Chooser event, Mojang showed off potential features for the reworked Desert biome including the Palm Tree and Meerkats. These small mongooses live in large groups called mobs and feed on insects and small rodents. Meerkats are fairly vicious, so they would likely be classified as Neutral in Minecraft.

The Badlands biome is a colorful, mountainous version of the Desert. A potential rework was revealed during the 2019 Biome Vote that showed the introduction of Tumbleweeds, Prickly Pear Cactus, and the new Vulture mob. This mob was slightly controversial at the time due to it seemingly being able to steal players’ loot, but that feature is unconfirmed until the Vulture is officially added to the game. Out of the three biomes in this vote- the Mountains, Swamp, and Badlands- this arid biome is the only one yet to receive an overhaul. Furthermore, Mountains got a whole update featured around them in the ‘Caves & Cliffs’ update.

Minecraft’s Savanna Biome Is Boring

Unsurprisingly, the biome with the least-used wood type would also be the most neglected aesthetically. From its brown-green foliage to the lifeless grey tree trunks of Acacia trees, the Savanna severely lacks unique and fun characteristics. Acacia is a versatile building block due to their grey bark and vibrant orange interior, but that is all the Savanna biome has going for it. In the 2018 Biome Chooser event, players voted between overhauling the Taiga, Desert, or Savanna. Players opted to improve the Taiga biome, which brought foxes, berries, and campfires to Minecraft

Multiple potential features for an overhauled Savanna biome were showcased during the Biome Chooser event. The new Ostrich mob would be added to the game with this expansion. The Ostrich’s abilities, drops, and behavior were not commented on, but in the teaser animation, the Ostrich can be seen burrowing its head into the ground. Contrary to the myth, Ostriches bury their heads in the sand to check the temperature for egg-laying. Since Ostriches are flightless, they must lay eggs in burrows underground. Other features shown in this teaser included Termites, Termite Mounds, and Baobab Trees.

Birch Forest Overhaul Remains Undelivered

At Minecraft Live 2021, many features scheduled to be released in the upcoming 1.19 update- dubbed ‘The Wild Update‘- never came to fruition. Bundles, initially announced the year prior, Fireflies and a Birch Forest revamp were all teased to arrive in 1.19. This overhaul would add multiple decorative features such as new flowers, hollowed-out tree trunks, mushrooms that grow on trees, and much more. However, as ‘The Wild Update’ prepared for release, many fans were disappointed with the lack of promised features. Birch is one of the most under-utilized blocks in the game, and the forest it originates from deserves a well-needed makeover.

Players Always Want New Biomes

Revamps of old, forgotten features are always welcomed by the Minecraft community, so it’s no surprise why players advocate for new, revamped biomes so heavily. They serve as a breath of fresh air in the face of stagnancy. For older games to stay relevant, they must remain modern to draw in new players and prevent old players from getting bored. As Minecraft approaches its 16th anniversary in May 2025, developers over at Mojang Studios must decide carefully which direction they want to head in. Hints of the upcoming 1.22 update have been scattered across the internet as Mojang prepares for its Winter 2024 content drop.
