MK1 Director Ed Boon Hints at T-1000 and Future DLC

MK1

Ed Boon posted on X, sharing some updates on Mortal Kombat 1 (MK1) that should please the community. Mortal Kombat has added a slew of characters over the years, and Boon showed teasers that caught the attention of the fans. Hinting at new DLC in the future, it is uncertain what NetherRealm Studios will come up with then. As MK1 competes with other fighting game giants like Tekken and Street Fighter, the developers must continue adding fresh content.

What Was Revealed About MK1

The development chief, Ed Boon, starts by stating that MK1 has sold over 5 million copies and was last reported at 4 million copies. The upcoming character T-1000 was shown performing one of his Fatalities in Boon’s tweet. Whether you’re a Terminator fan or not, the T-1000 is bound to be an exciting character to play. As shown in the short clip, the T-1000 drives a broken-down truck directly into the opponent. This refers to a chase scene from Terminator 2, where the T-1000 was driving the same truck going after John Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator.

Along with the sales update and teaser of the T-1000, the new character Conan the Barbarian was shown as the character on the receiving end of the T-1000 Fatality. The Terminator is the final DLC character in the MK1 Khaos Reigns expansion, which features characters like Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. As Boon stated, “With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!” Now, many fans are optimistic about more characters to come.

MK1 DLC Expectations

It is unclear what NetherRealm Studios plans for the future of Mortal Kombat 1, but with sales success and this hint by Ed Boon, updates are expected soon. Publishing and parent company Warner Bros. Discovery has stated that it is committed to continuing the success of the Mortal Kombat franchise. CEO David Zaslav of Warner Bros. Discovery has said the company plans to focus on only four gaming titles moving forward. The two main titles Warner Bros. and Boon have emphasized are Mortal Kombat and the popular DC title Injustice.

The MK1 fanbase is hopeful that NetherRealm Studios is planning on a 3rd set of characters to be released soon. Boon also stated in September that NetherRealm has decided on its next game release but promises to focus on and support MK1 for a long time to come. Many fans expect the developer to move towards making Injustice 3 as the next project. This was reportedly the plan before deciding to release MK1 instead; multiple factors went into this decision. COVID-19 was the main reason Boon stated, as well as wanting to switch to a new graphics engine, moving from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4.

Conclusion

Ed Boon is known for his cryptic tweets, and this post shared plenty of information with the fans. A new Mortal Kombat title is expected to be announced shortly, and optimistic fans should pay attention in the coming days for more news. MK1 is a well-made reboot with an active development team that pays attention to the community’s suggestions.

The game recently added a wide variety of characters from multiple franchises. The future of MK1 looks bright, but new content will not be released until the second round of characters is complete. Mortal Kombat is one of the oldest and most successful fighting game franchises of all time and remains a fan favorite. This franchise separates itself from the other fighting games with its extreme gore and violence. MK1 may not be for everyone due to this, but the exciting selection of characters is hard to resist.
