Fans of the world-renowned Monster Hunter franchise now have another mobile experience they can dig into. Monster Hunter Puzzles: Felyne Isles, a match-3 puzzle game, was released to Android and iOS on June 27. For fans of this type of game style, you now have something new to play around with if you’ve had your fill of Candy Crush. For the loyal players of Monster Hunter games, you get to experience your favorite monsters in a whole new light. Let’s see just what you’ll experience in Felyne Isles.
Welcome to Felyne Isles
In Monster Hunter Puzzles, you take the role of your own Felyne who seems to wash up on the shore of Felyne Isles with no memory of how they got there. It’s a classic kind of beginning seen in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games as well as the in-progress indie game, Amber Isle. From there, you meet other Felynes who are having loads of trouble due to the destructive forces monsters bring. The first monster you encounter is none other than the King of the Skies himself, Rathalos.
After your heroic Felyne helps fend off the monster, you’re then tasked with helping the entire community of Felyne Isles rebuild and restore their beloved businesses that have fallen to literal ashes. It’s a tall order for a stranger that just washed up on the shore, but it’s one that your character is destined to follow through with.
Mixing Match-3 Puzzles and Monsters
To help those desperate Felynes rebuild, you have to complete match-3 puzzle quests that will earn you both acorns and gems. You use acorns to build structures and carry the story along. Meanwhile, gems can be used to give you some extra moves if a level does end up getting the best of you. As you progress, the levels do get more challenging with more demanding requirements and trickier designs. With luck, practice, and skills at your disposal, you’ll be able to help your fellow Felynes in no time.
Acorns and gems are not the only rewards you can get from completing these levels. You’ll also be able to collect materials to craft new outfits for your character similar to the main line Monster Hunter games. Also like those games, you’ll occasionally go head-to-head with monsters that only want to impede your progress. However, these monsters don’t seem as big of a threat as the ones you fight as a human hunter.
Along with the main story, you can take part in levels to complete sub-quests given to you by the Felynes that you help. You can also earn bingo tickets, so you can try your hand at winning some new and spiffy furniture for the run-down property you’re given to live in. You may be a castaway, but at least you’ll have your own slice of paradise once you fix up your new home.
Monstrous Microtransactions
While you might have some great fun playing through Monster Hunter Puzzles, this game doesn’t fail to be a bit of a money trap just like the many match-3 puzzle games available. CAPCOM has gems and extra items to help you get through challenging levels for sale. The most expensive item in the Gem Shop adds up to $79.99, which is no pocket change.
There’s also a shop called the VIP Salon, which lets you buy helpful items as well as much more rare cosmetics. To purchase these, you’ll need VIP tickets. How do you get said tickets exactly? You buy a VIP License. That’s basically a fancy term for a monthly subscription to the game that will get you some extra goodies that aren’t required in the slightest. That is, of course, you absolutely need to have that beautiful, flowy Xeno’jiiva outfit for your Felyne.
