Monster Hunter Wilds has made its way into Gamescon and its way into the hearts of many hunters. Wilds welcomes weapons, new monsters, and new NPCs that range from narrative to supportive, both on the field and off the field. Why don’t we check them out?
NPCs
Is it important that we talk about NPCs? Not really, In an everyday game NPCs are everywhere walking every corner. So it’s not uncommon to see them but it is for Monster Hunter. Monster Hunter started to introduce various NPCs over the years, with Rise introducing a unique cast. For them to both have a name and a purpose was never part of Monster Hunter, the hunter/player had the purpose of the story with Rise introducing Hinoa and Minoto, and several others having a key function in the series. While slapping a name on a character doesn’t ensure someone will remember them, it most certainly will allow them to feel more than just a placement to fill a hole.
Alma
The first to come up on the list and one of the NPCs in Monster Hunter Wilds, we hunters are going to be acquainted with the most is Alma. Alma is this game, “Handler.” A Handler is the one who will appoint us quests, and give us information and permissions. From what is given to us in Gamescom, Alma will be riding out into the Wilds with us to survey monsters and the world alike. Allowing us to stay on top of info and various changes going around the environment. She will even supply us with items as we move throughout the world to make sure we stay stocked.
She is a more timid character but seems to have a fierce side once she gets going, she sports black hair protected by a bandana and round glasses, and she carries her book around her neck like a necklace.
We learned at Gamescom 2024 Day 2 of Monster Hunter Wilds Developer Live Stream, Alma can even do a small personality quiz to give you a weapon choice. Maybe if you are going in and don’t know what to use for day one or after you ran through the game and want to try out a new one, she could help you choose your next weapon.
Gemma
The next NPC hunters will be acquainted in Monster Hunter Wilds with will be Gemma, she is Wilds’ Smithy. She will be the one to handle our armor and weapons, as well as layered armor and upgrades assumingly. There hasn’t been much to say about her but she seems like a spunky free-spirited from the trailers with an accent, that has blonde hair and a braid.
Olivia, Athos, and Nata
Olivia is part of the Hunter’s Guild Expedition Team, she wields a hammer. She is one of the support hunters that you can call in on an SOS for NPC support. It was one of the features introduced in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. In Rise, you normally select if you want support hunters and they will ride in with you. Here, in Wilds, assuming you can do the same but then you will shoot off a SOS flare and call them in for backup.
Olivia seems to be a hard-headed and handed type of character with a sturdy will, she has wind-swept blond hair. Athos is assuming Olivia’s palico, she seems heroic in her way but wielding a great sword. One thing to add to Monster Hunter Wild’s is Palico’s, the hunter’s feline support will now have vocal options! This means our furry buddies will now be able to speak in our language as they fight alongside us. Nata, there isn’t much to say, in the first trailer we see him in a possible flashback or future sight of him in a situation but if I had to say anything, he will have a connection with something going forward, like Hinoa and Minoto from Rise.
Home Sweet Home
There isn’t much to say about the HeadQuarters in Monster Hunter Wilds but if it is anything like the other HQs we will have areas for us to sleep in, our handler will have her own place, we will have a place to eat where I am sure we will meet a new palico chief, and a place for our new smithy to work in. There should be places where we can accept commissions if going to the handler isn’t your style or accept research bounties. All in all, I am looking forward to the next core game in the franchise and will be excited to see where this adventure will take us. I will see my fellow hunters on the field!
