Day one of Gamescom 2024 is in the books, and Monster Hunter fans are feasting on even more updates. The first Monster Hunter Wilds Developer Livestream was held on August 21. It allowed future players currently not experiencing the demo in Cologne, Germany to see a good amount of gameplay. During the broadcast, many key improvements and additions were shown off and explained among all the hunting fun. Here are some key points from the showcase.
No More Gender-Locked Armor
One of the first developments to come out of it was the confirmation of something fans around the world have been asking for. In Monster Hunter Wilds, there will no longer be gender-locked armor. What Monster Hunter fans have grown used to is having a differently styled armor set depending on whether they choose to make a character with a male or female model. One of the biggest criticisms of past games involves the appearance of female armor sets compared to their male counterparts. Many say that the female armor revealed too much skin compared to the usually more bulky and more covered male armor.
Thanks to talented developers, they will no longer have to worry about unequal-looking designs. Every player will be able to choose between two styles of armor set to better satisfy their sense of fashion. They will even be able to mix and match the styles they so choose. This announcement caused nothing short of a victory cry across social media. The source of the cheering comes from fans who have been asking for this change perhaps for several generations of Monster Hunter games. Yes, this means male hunters will be able to don the frilly and flowery dress that hunting LaLa Barina appears to unlock
Major Quality of Life Improvements
There will be a host of updates to the quality of life at Monster Hunter Wilds. They mainly involve the equipment that hunters take into quests. Players who choose to start a quest immediately after completing one will no longer have to return to camp to restock on free supplies. The items will instead be delivered to the player’s Seikret. This is because starting a new quest no longer involves having to return to a town every single time. Along with that news, the ability to pick up misplaced traps has also been confirmed to be in the game. There will be no more frustration involving wasted traps caused by monsters that choose to not cooperate.
Most hunters know that eating is important just like the equipment they bring to a hunt. The developers of Monster Hunter Wilds seem to know that too since cooking has returned to the game. It’s also been vastly improved. Along with nice cuts of meat, players will be able to add two more ingredients for a custom meal on the go. These ingredients provide different Food Skills as well as some varied animations. For example, when mushrooms were added to the meal shown in the broadcast, an animation showed the hunter sprinkling mushrooms in the pan. This is bound to please the players who enjoy more immersion in their gameplay.
More Immersive Monsters
Speaking of immersion, hunts themselves will feel more lively. Encounters with monsters will be more varied and unpredictable. This includes interactions between multiple monsters. During the developer livestream, it was explained that the result of a battle between a large monster and a group of small monsters can be different. The small monsters can sometimes overtake and overpower a larger one just like in real life. This is more likely to happen with less powerful monsters like Chatacabra, which was mentioned during the broadcast.
More large monsters appear to be capable of being in the same locale at one time. Players are used to only seeing up to three large monsters at times for the most part. That appears to not be the case in Monster Hunter Wilds. This was partially confirmed with previous trailers because of certain large monsters traveling in groups. However, during the livestream, four different kinds of large monsters appeared without one leaving the Windward Plains locale. With how large the map is, this didn’t make things seem crowded at all.
A Complete Map Overhaul
With a large locale comes the need for explanation. The upgraded map interface for Monster Hunter Wilds helps with just that. The developers realized that some players had a hard time getting around in previous games, so they decided to help with that. The map is now 3D, which helps to show the true verticality of a local. It can even be rotated, so players can examine it at all angles to help get a proper layout of the huge area.
Conclusion
With every bit of new information revealed about Monster Hunter Wilds, the excitement continues to grow. Much more information is yet to be revealed. An official release date has still not been announced except for the vague 2025 window. The flagship for the game hasn’t been revealed either. It was a common belief that one of the latest shown monsters, Rey Dau, was going to be it. However, that no longer appears to be the case. Nevertheless, fans of the series seem to be happy to get any bit of information they can as they await the release of the first game in the sixth generation of Monster Hunter.
