Both Tempered and Frenzied monsters are officially returning in Monster Hunter Wilds. This news was confirmed during a special event for Wilds that was broadcast on PlayStation Japan’s YouTube channel. These stronger versions of regular monsters are set to cause hunters around the world some exciting and extra trouble in the end game. Players who have experienced previous games know just what kind of challenges these harder versions bring. They can now speculate just what having this combination means when Monster Hunter Wilds is unleashed into the world in full.
Tempered Monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds
Tempered monsters first appeared in Monster Hunter World, so they’re a relatively fresh concept in terms of the series. In simple terms, a monster becomes Tempered when it survives lifetimes full of combat and comes out stronger. Their attacks begin to deal more damage due to their experience. In World, and now Wilds, Tempered monsters are easily identifiable due to their icons having a purple outline. In Wilds, it appears that Tempered monsters will drop special materials that will craft special weapons called Artian weapons.
While Tempered monsters have been confirmed, it’s not clear if they’ll function the same way as they do in World. It’s also not clear if Arch-Tempered monsters will make a reappearance as well. They’re even stronger than their Tempered brethren, and they can be identified with an orange outline. If they do return, that means hunters won’t have to worry about a quest as dreaded as the Arch-Tempered Kirin quest. However, a Tempered Arkveld may still become many hunters’ worst nightmare in Monster Hunter Wilds.
All About Frenzied Monsters
The appearance of a Frenzied Nerscylla in PlayStation Japan’s broadcast brought delight to many older Monster Hunter fans. As Gore Magala is returning, the Frenzy Virus returns with it. Gore, Chaotic Gore, and Shagaru Magala all can cause other monsters to suffer from it. Hunters can suffer from the virus as well, but it has a different effect on them. The goal of spreading it, at least for Shagaru, is to reproduce. When a monster becomes Frenzied, the ultimate goal is its transformation into a brand new Gore Magala, which is the larval version of Shagaru Magala. A Chaotic Gore Magala is created when a Gore is unable to fully molt.
While all three of those monsters were in Monster Hunter Rise, Frenzied monsters didn’t make an appearance in the game. Their last appearance in the mainline games was in Monster Hunter 4 and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. That new players in the giant wave that World brought in never got to experience them unless they managed to get their hands on that generation. The mere presence of Frenzied monsters may be enough evidence to add Shagaru to the official roster as well, but that is yet to be confirmed.
What This Combo Could Mean
Having both Tempered and Frenzied monsters will lead to a challenging and interesting end to the base game. While some parts of Wilds are left shrouded in mystery, the possibility of encountering a Tempered Frenzied monster could become reality. If that were to happen, it could result in battles that would go down in Monster Hunter history for their difficulty. They might not reach Fatalis-level in difficulty, but they could surpass Risen Valstrax or Hazard Amatsu in Rise.
