Most Fun Resident Evil Protagonists in 2024

resident evil protagonists

The Resident Evil protagonists are some of the most iconic in video game history. These characters bring their own unique arcs and storylines to the series, as well as their own gameplay styles. The characters help breathe life into the world of Resident Evil and add to its campy atmosphere. With such a large amount of protagonists in the series, it’s difficult to pick a favorite one. In this article, we will list some of our favorite Resident Evil protagonists and what makes them so fun to play.

Most Fun Resident Evil Protagonists: Chris Redfield

Chris Redfield is one of the most well-known characters of the entire Resident Evil franchise. Chris joined the Air Force in the late 90s, before becoming a point man for the Raccoon City S.T.A.R.S. team. He was present at the Spencer Mansion incident; the catalyst for all that came later in the series. He has worked for various organizations throughout his career, including the Private Anti-Biohazard Service and the BSAA. In the current series timeline, he is captain of the BSAA’s elite Hound Wolf Squad and has also trained RE7 and Village‘s protagonist Ethan Winters’ daughter Rosemary.

Chris embodies values of loyalty and duty and takes himself super seriously. His behavior is sometimes comical as he often lets his emotions get the better of him, such as his first meeting with Piers in RE6. In Resident Evil 5, he has a more jacked appearance and famously punches a boulder during the game’s final boss battle against Wesker. His melee attacks also incorporate WWE-style moves, especially in RE5 and 6, utilizing over-the-top body slams and wild uppercuts. In RE7‘s DLC, he is a playable character who feels very OP when compared with the less-trained Ethan Winters. Playing as Chris is always a blast.

Leon S. Kennedy

Leon Kennedy was present during the Raccoon City incident where he was a police officer for the RCPD. He was recruited into the anti-Umbrella team of USSTRATCOM where he conducted several operations around the globe until 2011. In Resident Evil 4, Leon is dispatched by the US government to rescue the President’s daughter in rural Spain. His often unwarranted sarcasm and calmness in high-pressure situations have made him a fan favorite. His skills have increased dramatically throughout his long history in the series and this is reflected in later games as he becomes more of an action hero.

Resident Evil 4 put the spotlight on Leon as the main protagonist and introduced new features such as a combat knife and melee attacks. Fans loved this new style of gameplay that allowed Leon to become a one-man army against the Los Plagas. Resident Evil 6 gave Leon his own campaign alongside Helena Harper. The new game mechanics of RE6 make Leon more fun than ever to play, as he punches, kicks, and shoots his way through countless zombies. He is also given a hidden mechanic that allows him to dual-wield handguns, making him a highly lethal killing machine.

Ada Wong

Ada Wong isn’t one of the traditional Resident Evil protagonists, but she is an interesting playable character nonetheless. She often works as a spy or mercenary, seeking to obtain bioweapons for different people and organizations. Though she is often at odds with the main protagonists, she has betrayed her employers multiple times, especially when it comes to saving Leon from danger. Ada and Leon have an “it’s complicated” kind of relationship, which persists throughout the series. Ada is a unique character in that she has no firm loyalty to any particular organization, being somewhat of an antihero.

Initially introduced as a supporting character, Ada is actually playable in a few instances. She was first playable in RE2 as Leon’s partner and could fire her handgun quicker than the other characters. She is playable in Resident Evil 4‘s Separate Ways and Assignment Ada, having a faster running speed than Leon as well as an array of dazzling melee attacks. Ada can also use her hookshot device to reach previously inaccessible positions. Ada Wong offers players a new perspective on the story along with a more fast-paced playstyle complete with her own set of unique abilities.

Honorable Mention: Ethan Winters

Ethan Winters was introduced in Resident Evil 7 and offered players a refreshing alternative to the series’ stereotypical macho action heroes. Ethan didn’t have extensive training like protagonists Chris or Leon, which helped bring back the horror element to the series, as Ethan is a more relatable everyman who makes the danger he faces feel more real. Ethan has been through a lot of rough stuff in his short time in the series compared to other protagonists and has a penchant for constantly losing appendages. Ethan’s fresh perspective on the series and the overwhelming hardships he experiences make him an exciting character to play.

Honorable Mention: Jake Wesker

This one may draw some ire, but Jake is definitely one of the most fun Resident Evil protagonists. Jake appears as a playable character in RE6 alongside Sherry Birkin. They form an uneasy alliance, both being the children of major villains in the series. Jake has a slightly comedic performance as he is the brooding bad boy and antithesis to the series hero Chris Redfield. Being mutated by the C-Virus, Jake can use pure hand-to-hand combat in the place of a weapon, turning him into a sort of Neo from The Matrix as this can be used to take on hordes of zombies at once.

Residents of Evil

With so many Resident Evil protagonists, it is hard to pick our absolute favorites. These are just a few that stand out to us as genuinely fun characters, either because of their campy personalities, bad jokes, or unique gameplay. With new characters regularly being added to the series, we can’t wait to see what the future of Resident Evil has to offer in terms of interesting protagonists. Until then, this is a great time to revisit older games in the franchise and experience them for yourself.
