Between massive AAA releases, the indie scene always gives gamers original and avant-garde concepts. One of the biggest upcoming examples is the Mouse P.I. For Hire. The game pays homage to the “Golden Age” of cartoons from the 1930s. The game follows a hard-boiled detective blasting through a crime-filled cartoon landscape. Furthermore, the game shows how to make use of public-domain ideas.
Mouse P.I. For Hire Arrives
A trailer from GameSpot gave gamers a new look at the upcoming indie first-person shooter Mouse P.I. For Hire. The game is a rarely seen “2.5D” in which 2D characters navigate a 3D world, a style not used since the early Elder Scrolls games. Much like fellow period piece Bioshock, the game features an array of power-ups, unique abilities, and powerful guns for the player to use to dispatch thugs. As for its story, the game follows a mouse detective on his quest to rid his corrupt city of crime.
The game’s art style is also fairly interesting in its design. While the characters and weapons themselves are drawn in the style of classic cartoons, the backgrounds and settings are fairly plain in their appearance, which helps balance the player’s attention during the game. This is the first game created by developer Fumi Games, and minor studio PlaySide published the game. While no release date was given, they plan to release the game in 2025 on Steam.
The Game’s Homage to Old Cartoons
From the first teaser and trailer for Mouse P.I. For Hire, viewers can find many Easter Eggs and homages to Golden Age cartoons. The footage shows immense attention to detail. Examples include cartoonish death animations, spinach as a power-up, white gloves, and other small details. Furthermore, the game boasts an authentic sound design and an amazing jazz soundtrack.
Many gamers will immediately compare the game to the other indie hits Cuphead and Bendy and the Ink Machine. Both games paid homage to the same era of animation and are frequently compared to one another. The works of Max Fleischer and Disney during this era laid the foundation for most modern animation, so there is a wide pool of influence to pull from.
Furthermore, Mouse P.I. For Hire pays other forms of homage to its period. The main character is a private eye, as implied by the title, and takes heavy influence from the famous “noir” genre of films. Furthermore, the mobsters and gangs are inspired by the infamous prohibition era of American history. Seeing the classic aesthetic used in an FPS is a downright hilarious combination to watch.
Why This Game is Brilliant
While the game is impressive enough on its own, what makes this such a brilliant idea is how it cleverly reimagines public domain works. Since Disney properties started entering the public domain, directors have been using them surprisingly uncreatively. Immediately, a slew of “edgy” horror films such as Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and Steamboat Willie were nothing more than generic slasher films. While not based on any one property, Mouse P.I. For Hire takes similar inspirations.
Mouse P.I. For Hire, however, takes an inventive route in paying homage to classic cartoons. While its subject matter is decidedly more mature than kid-friendly, it does so in a way that fits its era, as mentioned above. Overall, this creation from Fumi Games is a powerful demonstration of how to create a layered homage that understands the ideas and themes of what it’s taking inspiration from.
