We don’t expect anything less from Wizards of the Coast. Magic: The Gathering stays fresh. Period. That’s why this year, the MTG release schedule for 2024 has already been through four expansions!
Here Are the Four Expansions We’ve Already Seen This Year on the MTG Release Schedule
Starting off with:
- Ravnica Remastered, 1/12/2024
- Murders at Karlov Manor, 2/9/2024
- Fallout, 3/8/2024
- Outlaws of Thunder Junction, 4/19/2024
Talk about “set release crazy” to the extreme! And Fallout? The crossovers are insane, but you haven’t seen anything, yet.
Here’s what to expect next on the 2024 MTG release schedule.
Modern Horizons 3 Is Coming
This is a banger many players probably would know all too well. After all, this is the “third” iteration of a set that’s so hugely anticipated for a lot of reasons (but also can be dreaded in some ways, which we’ll get to).
For starters, Modern Horizons is always known for bringing out cards with mechanics and abilities that will burn your eyeballs. They’re exciting, yes, but here’s the issue: many times, cards like, say, Invoke Despair or Meathook Massacre mess up the meta in some massive ways solely on the insane power level. Imagine a set capable of breaking the game with power levels times a hundred.
More often than not, that’s in general how Modern Horizons is viewed.
What we’ll see with Modern Horizons 3? Oh, the usual:
- A cycle of free spells to cast
- Some fetch land reprints
- A batch of freakin’ titans (read further down at the bottom to know what those titans will be!)
And what else? Wait for it…. double-facing transforming planeswalkers.
So, yeah: we might see some bans or restrictions with this release on June 14th, 2024. Might.
And, spoiler alert…. This will be the first Modern Horizons set to release on MTG Arena. You heard it here. Ain’t that an outlaw’s merriment?
And Expect the Power Creep to Be Massive
That generally was the case for the past two Modern Horizon sets. Remember Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis? Expect stuff like that with this set.
And while classics like Wrenn and Six and Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer also made dents into the Modern format back in the day, with this being strictly a grounded expansion not necessarily centered on any given plane like Innistrad or Ravnica, monstrous heathens like another Wrenn (and Eight, maybe??) or an iteration on Ragavan might also turn the tables on this metagame.
Yet there’s a lot to go up against — the Sheoldreds, the Elesh Norns, the Orcish Bowmasters from LOTR, the Lava Darts. Modern floods faster than six lands in your starting hand.

What About New Bans and Restrictions?
Funny you ask: you may have noticed the banned and restricted list hasn’t grown much throughout a few expansions. Almost like WotC was nailing it somehow. The only ones we could remember were Meathook, Invoke Despair, Reckoner Bankbuster, and Fable of the Mirror Breaker. That’s it.
But when it comes to Modern, that gate may swing either way! No telling which way. Why? Because it’s Modern.
Unlike Standard, this is a format that thrives on players getting to put a lot of time and effort into a certain archetype for a very long while. That’s why it’s called “Modern Horizons.” In a way, it’s just meant for Modern gameplay.
Bans do happen, though — we saw it with Arcbound Ravager Affinity and Mox Opal. Yet even with certain bans in the Modern format, mono-green Tron tends to run rampant on the format. Makes you wonder: will this new set of Modern Horizons play it slim for green and ramp up the other colors more? We shall see.
Although one thing’s for sure: we will see some Eldrazi.
Lift your jaw up, please.
