Ouka Studios Ends: NetEase Delivers a Crushing Blow to Vision of Mana

The corporation’s parent company, NetEase Games is planning to close Ouka Studios, the Japanese studio. Just a day after the release ‘Of Visions of Mana‘, Ouka Studios is reportedly set to be closed down by its Chinese parent company NetEase Games due to a strategic shift from Japanese-centric projects, Bloomberg reported recently. This big story is really broken; the latest release should have been good news to finally see the fruit of their great work after pausing 25 years when the last game was released.

Shut Down on Day One?

Many YouTube sites gave overviews in their video that the Vision of Mana looks fantastic, bright, and colorful in graphics, the world is large and fun to explore and the combat is also pretty fluid it just looks like a great JRPG in modern times. But now is a bizarre thing and cannot be dismissed so easily because Vision of Mana is not like a small indie 2D game and the reviews aren’t even in the players weren’t even through day one of the game being out and already hugely credible source Bloomberg saying that Ouka Studios is going to be shut down by its owner NetEase.

What Happened On Ouka Studios?

Still, according to a Bloomberg report, NetEase has pretty much gotten rid of all the staff of Ouka Studios minus a small pool of staff people will be kept afloat that are just there for the time being to basically manage and update Vision of Mana until its final game has been released and the Ouka Studios will be completely dissolved. And yet, not long ago at the beginning of the year to be precise, Squire Enix Ltd  as part of Xbox’s developer direct represented by Mana Series Producer, Masaru Oyamada revealed new details about the Vision of Mana with a glimmer of optimism

“Nothing to announce” That was what NetEase said in a Bloomberg report but still in a move met shock by gamer enthusiasts.  Behind the closure of Ouka Studios, there are key factors that led to this decision that are still a matter of conjecture and speculation. NetEase and Tencent might have concluded that investing in studios abroad, particularly in Japan, has not yielded the expected returns. Recently, a relatively small Chinese developer managed to sell 10 million copies of Black Myth: Wukong within just three days. This has led them to reconsider investing domestically, especially in light of the misalignment of vision with Japanese developers who like small-scale projects, low risk, and a small budget

NetEase Weighs Impact on the Chinese Market

NetEase and Tencent initially expanded into Japan over the past few years due to increasingly strict game regulation oversight in their domestic market. This was stated by industry analyst and CEO of Kantan Games, Serkan Toto, a year ago. According to Serkan Toto, “both of these tech giants feel pressure to make progress in Japan, especially as gaming regulations in their domestic market become more stringent.” However, their strategy began to shift as the Chinese market improved with the global success of Black Myth: Wukong (In this case, Tencent holds a 5% stake in the developer Game Science).

NetEase’s Financial Performance: Growth and Strategy

NetEase’s financial highlights for the three months ending June 30, 2024, indicate that the company achieved net revenue of $3.5 billion, with a total of 96.1 percent coming from its gaming division, representing a 6.7% increase from the previous year.

NetEase Achievement and Upcoming Released

NetEase has some outstanding games. Games such as Shooter Lost Light, Once Human, Identity Five, Justice Mobile, Naraka: Blade Point, and 5v5 filled the top rankings and recorded an increase in net income. Finally, Marvel Rival which is Netease’s new game is planned to be released globally at the end of this year, December 6th to be exact if nothing changes.
