Dragon Ball Sparking! ZERO has had an explosive year since its inception. This project was initially revealed as a sequel to the much-beloved Budokai Tenkaichi series. Fans all over the world have been requesting a sequel to this game for so long. Now, after fifteen years, the Budokai Tenkaichi franchise has made its grand return. Each trailer has helped further showcase the game’s extensive roster. The fans have seen many old faces, alongside new additions.
Budokai Tenkaichi, and Sparking! ZERO
Sparking! ZERO is the long-awaited sequel to the original Budokai Tenkaichi trilogy. The game trilogy consisted of 2005’s Budokai Tenkaicih, 2006’s Budokai Tenkaichi 2, and 2007’s Budokai Tenkaichi 3. In addition, a handheld spinoff named Tenkaichi Tag-Team was released in 2010 for the Playstation Portable. The Budokai Tenkaichi series is a well-known facet of Dragon Ball’s video game history. They are 3D fighting games developed by Spike, prior to its merger with Chunsoft to create Spike Chunsoft.
The Budokai Tenkaichi games were built around 3D arena fighters, using a third-person perspective. Characters assume control of one of many Dragon Ball characters. Characters battle it out across numerous stages based on iconic Dragon Ball locations. In terms of abilities, every character has a ‘Blast 2’ skill that lets them use superattacks. Characters can charge ki, either manually by holding down a button or by fighting enemies. Budokai Tenkaichi’s gameplay mechanics make every character approachable, and easy to pick up.

Sparking! ZERO has made quite an impression on the fanbase with each new trailer. Sparking! ZERO’s trailers are split between two ‘sets’. The first set followed a specific theme that grouped random characters together. ‘Power Vs. Justice’ focused on strong, slow characters like Ultra Trunks, and quick characters like the pride trooper Dyspo. Later trailers began grouping characters together based off of their saga. For example, the ‘Android Saga’ trailer included many heavy hitters, such as Doctor Gero, Cell‘s various incarnations, Android 19, and Super Saiyan Teen Gohan. Overall, the trailers have proven to be good demonstrations of the characters’ skills.
Sparking! ZERO has also provided people with the opportunity to wish for anyone. The Budokai Tenkaichi series has often made numerous obscure and underused characters playable. The original games even used Saibamen and generic Frieza Soldiers as playable characters. King Cold is one such example, being Frieza’s ‘father’, and someone you would expect to have importance. However, he is swiftly killed off by Future Trunks and is almost rarely mentioned since. Nevertheless, King Cold is a confirmed fighter on the roster, and his presence has shown how expansive the roster can be.
2024 is the year of Dragon Ball
2024 marks Dragon Ball’s fourteenth anniversary, and fans are excited. It has been forty years since a boy started his magical journey to collect the dragon balls. The franchise has offered so much to the fans and helped influence the manga genre. Sparking! ZERO is just one aspect of this because there is more to come. Debuting on October 11 with Sparking! ZERO is Dragon Ball DAIMA, a new installment in Dragon Ball’s animated lineup. The series was a hands-on passion project from Akira Toriyama before his unfortunate passing. People are already speculating that DAIMA’s characters will find a way in Dragon Ball.
The sheer fact that Budokai Tenkaichi is getting a new installment has created hope within the fanbase. So many Dragon Ball fans have grown up on the original series, and it’s shaped their love for these games. Video game players, both old and new, already have plans to buy Sparking! ZERO when it came out. Sparking! ZERO was a wish that many people did not expect to come true, and now it has.
