Dying Light: The Beast – New Trailer Analysis

Techland has recently released a new trailer for the new standalone title for the Dying Light series called Dying Light: The Beast. It revealed many unexpected yet, highly anticipated new elements including a returning fan-favorite character, a new location, and returning gameplay mechanics. Techland remains committed to providing its fans and player base with new content even long after the game releases, such as the first story DLC for Dying Light 2: Bloody Ties, which sprung some new life into the game. Here’s what we know so far about The Beast.

The Legend Returns

Dying Light fans all rejoiced in excitement to see the legend himself return after an unknown fate in The Following DLC: Kyle Crane. Who is Kyle Crane, newcomers may ask? Well, here’s some enlightenment on the legendary hero of Harran. Kyle Crane is a mercenary operative who was hired by the Global Relief Effort (GRE) to track down a terrorist named Rais who had a file that had crucial research on a cure for the Harran Virus.

Despite becoming infected upon his arrival, his speed and agility made him a valuable asset to the survivors who lived in the twin apartment towers in the slums of Harran and the survivors in the clocktower and university in the Old Town of Harran. Crane also helped the survivors of the countryside in The Following DLC, he was last seen in the main safehouse of The Following cult, confronting The Mother.

Since he has made a grand return years after the events of the first Dying Light, there are a lot of questions about him. These include: what happened after The Following? What happened to Harran and the survivors there? How is he still alive? These are answers that we will only get on the standalone. Fortunately, the developers are interested in resolving some of this it seems.

What we know so far

The Beast standalone occurs sometime during or after The Fall considering the setting shows overgrown vegetation over the buildings and old environmental damage. Crane returns just as agile as he was in the first game, seen slicing and dicing all enemies alike, whether it is infected or what looks to be mercenaries with advanced gear from before The Fall. The game’s description can be summarized as the following: Kyle Crane manages to escape from an unknown organization after being experimented on for over a decade, now on a quest for revenge against the organization.

He ventures into a new location known as Castor Woods, a former tourist location before The Fall, to locate his captors. This spot is home to all new types of factions, survivors, and threats that we haven’t seen before in Villador, not to mention The Beast which has selected this place as its new hunting ground. There could be more on the way like the driving mechanics and new enemy variants shown in the announcement trailer, but time will tell what will be in store for us.

What Remains a Mystery

Although it’s great to see Kyle Crane back in action in the Dying Light series again, this now raises a bunch of new questions about what happened to him after the first game. One of the most speculated theories about the original game is Kyle Crane’s The Night Hunter. It no longer seems the case in the upcoming The Beast standalone, however, it cannot be ruled out either.

The description of The Beast standalone states that Crane was held captive for over a decade by an unknown group and experimented on before he managed to escape: Who is this group? Why were they experimenting on him? What happened to Crane after the events of the original Dying Light that led to his capture? Only time will tell. With everything seen in the announcement trailer, all we can do is speculate.

Departing Thoughts

Dying Light: The Beast is available to add to your wishlist on PlayStation, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox. Players who own the Ultimate Edition of Dying Light 2 will receive the standalone for free, while those who have not, will be charged. This is a highly anticipated standalone that will rock the socks off of new players and long-time fans of the series. As we eagerly await more news on this standalone, we hope this will finally answer some questions long overdue.

The Dying Light seems to be one of the few Zombie video games that has it down just right, while others struggle to follow a simple formula or stray too far from what makes them so great. Techland will be sure to not make those mistakes as well. The Beast may be another example of their prowess.
