New Zelda Game to Have Fascinating Gameplay Mechanic

New Zelda game

The new Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, is set to totally revamp the franchise. For the first time in a mainline entry, Princess Zelda will not only be a playable character but also the main protagonist. Her name has been at the forefront of this game series since its inception, and roughly 38 years later, she is finally assuming the role of the true star. That is a big change for the franchise, but it’s not the only major change coming to the series with the new Zelda game.

The new Zelda game switched things up by revealing that Zelda would be the protagonist and the playable character. Nintendo has once again switched things up and surprised players by revealing that Link will also be playable in the game. The trailer reveals that Link is among those captured by the mysterious rifts that open up, thus leaving Zelda to protect herself and save everyone else. However, the ESRB rating was revealed recently, and the synopsis provided there adds a wrinkle.

The rating says, “This is an adventure game in which players assume the role of Zelda as she attempts to dispel rifts throughout Hyrule and rescue Link. From a ¾-overhead perspective, players explore various environments while fighting stylized enemies (e.g., humans, creatures). As Link, players use a sword and arrows to defeat enemies; Zelda can use a magic wand to summon creatures (e.g., wind-up knights, pig soldiers, slime) for battle. Some enemies can be defeated by being set on fire; other creatures dissolve into mist when defeated. Battle sequences are somewhat frenetic, with several enemies attacking/fighting at once.”

The keywords here are “as Zelda” and “as Link” since that suggests that gamers will at least briefly be able to assume control of both characters. This is unprecedented for The Legend of Zelda. Almost every other game in the entire series has been played as Link, so switching back and forth is brand new. It remains unclear how this will occur in-game since the one trailer only showed Link fighting Ganondorf and then falling into a rift.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom To Feature Two Combat Styles

Also revealed in that synopsis is the presence of two different combat styles. When players assume the role of Link, they will fight with a sword and shield. They will also use arrows, but those are all the typical fighting methods for the fabled Hero of Time. He is a fighter, but Princess Zelda is not. In The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, she will use a brand-new and totally unique combat style: magic.

In the trailer for the new Zelda game, the princess is seen using a magic wand to create items to fight with. Instead of attacking directly with a weapon, she created a rock and threw it at an enemy. In some instances, she even created an enemy to attack the other enemy. The synopsis ESRB provided revealed that she can summon creatures and do other things with her magic rod (fire, dissolution, etc) to eliminate those in her path. That will all be completely new to the series, and it’s an exciting change. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom releases on September 26!
