A new Zelda game was just announced at the recent Nintendo Direct. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom was a surprising sight for fans who expected a bevy of remakes. Many had been clamoring for classic Zelda titles to be remade for Switch, but instead, developers introduced a totally new and unexpected title.
Echoes of Wisdom is made in the same art style as the 2019 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. The first clips of the trailer seemed to indicate that a second remake in that style was on the way. Viewers were surprised to see that it was not a remake but a totally original game. They were shocked once again to find out that the developers had changed one big part of the gameplay.
New Zelda Game Changes Protagonist
The Legend of Zelda has seen 29 games over the last 37 years. The franchise has almost exclusively been led by Link, the silent hero who takes on unfathomable evils and saves the princess every single time. For Echoes of Wisdom, Link is the one in danger and Princess Zelda is tasked with saving both him and Hyrule. It’s the role Link has had for all of time, and now it’s Zelda’s turn.
In Echoes of Wisdom, Link comes to rescue Zelda as usual before he’s swallowed up by a rift. These dangerous and mysterious rifts have arisen all over Hyrule, and they’ve taken a lot of people. Zelda, once the damsel in distress, must assume the role of hero. She gets unique gameplay skills, including her echoes that can make copies of items.
This is one gameplay change many had asked for but didn’t expect to see. Link is a fantastic protagonist, but it was well beyond time for Zelda, the character whose name has been used in every game title, to lead a game. Even Princess Peach got her own game a long time ago in the Super Mario franchise.
When Does The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Come Out?
The new Zelda game is very exciting, and it is coming soon. Sometimes, new games are announced with a wide gap between that and the ultimate release date. That isn’t the case for Echoes of Wisdom, as gamers only have to wait until September 26, 2024. It is officially on the Nintendo release schedule.
It will be released for the Nintendo Switch exclusively. It won’t be on any other platforms. Nintendo, true to their word, revealed nothing about the Switch 2 in the Direct, so there’s no telling when that console is coming. It’s possible that Echoes of Wisdom will be ported over eventually, but that has not yet been revealed.
