Huge Announcements: Black Flag Remake Reveals the Assassin’s Creed and Modern-Day Storyline is Fading Away September 19, 2025

Assassin’s Creed fans are currently riding a wave of disappointment following a new report about the highly anticipated Black Flag remake. French outlet Jeuxvideo recently revealed that the upcoming pirate adventure will no longer include any modern-day gameplay. Unsurprisingly, the community has not responded well to this news. That said, how will Ubisoft address this public backlash?

Black Flag Remake Abandons Its Animus Anchor

In the original Assassin’s Creed game, segments were featured that showed players stepping out of the Animus to explore the offices of Abstergo Entertainment. From there, they would slowly uncover how the story of pirate Edward Kenway connected to the larger, ongoing modern narrative of the franchise. With these segments being taken out, some fans are left in a state of confusion, wondering how the story will even make sense. Ubisoft reportedly discussed its plans in response to this public outcry against cutting these particular sections.

The company has decided to bulk up the historical pirate content to make up for the lost gameplay hours. Specifically, new story elements for characters like Mary Read, a fellow pirate whose arc was never fully explored in the base game, will be included in the Black Flag remake. Not only that, but the remake is getting a combat and gear system overhaul to bring it more in line with recent entries in the series. However, many players still think these additions are a poor trade for losing the modern-day context that gives the franchise its unique flavor.

Fans Feel Assassinated By This Creative Decision

Over on Reddit, the reaction has been a mix of confusion and frustration. One fan pointed out that the Assassin’s Creed games risk becoming just another open-world action RPG without the modern-day storyline and its ancient alien sci-fi elements. Moreover, these games would be similar to a Witcher clone with some stealth mechanics tacked on.

Another fan, however, pleaded with Ubisoft to stop removing modern-day content from their games. To them, these segments remain one of their favorite aspects of the earlier games and a fundamental part of how the franchise’s storytelling works. Given that the modern-day storyline in the recently released Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is practically non-existent, some players have expressed particular disappointment over this missing element.

For other fans, legitimate questions about the plot have been raised, with some users wondering how Black Flag would handle the important story elements. Sage, whose revelation is deeply tied to the modern-day Abstergo sections, is one key character who has been brought up. Other fans have echoed the sentiment, stating that the modern-day ending literally serves as the bookend for Edward Kenway’s entire story.

A Timeless Tale Loses Its Time Travel

With his absence, Black Flag‘s story becomes overshadowed by a glaring plothole. Revisiting the older modern-day plot involving the character Juno might require some explanation. This is especially required since her story was imfamously concluded in a comic book. Consequently, many fans saw this remake as a perfect opportunity to fix that misstep, giving that storyline the in-game conclusion it deserved.

The mounting evidence and years of leaks from voice actors and collectible manufacturers haven’t pressured Ubisoft to announce the Black Flag remake officially. Therefore, fans will have to settle for speculating and hope that the reports are wrong, or that the developers have a clever narrative workaround. Either way, the company will need to address these concerns to see a successful launch. Otherwise, it won’t matter if players sail into a beautifully updated world if it feels oddly empty of the soul that made the original so special.
