Following New Dungeons & Dragons Game, Warlock, Rumors of Baldur’s Gate 4 Finally Confirmed
After the reveal of “Warlock,” a new “Dungeons & Dragons” game from Wizards of the Coast, “Baldur’s Gate 3” fans are eagerly awaiting a direct sequel. In “Warlock,” a third-person action-adventure title, players are transported to an open-world exploration with immersive sim elements. Additionally, the game stars actor Tricia Helfer as a magic-wielding hero named Katri. Developed by Invoke Studios, the team behind the poorly received “Dark Alliance,” this project aims for a 2027 release. So, is this ambitious new title a fresh start or a cause for concern given the developer’s history?
Don’t Call It Baldur’s Gate 4, Please
According to Invoke Studios leadership, “Warlock” represents a clean slate. That game was developed by a largely different team with experience from titles like “Watch Dogs.” Moreover, it focuses on expressive, systemic spellcasting for combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving within a vast open world. Interestingly, the developers explicitly stated they were prioritizing a cinematic, single-player video game rather than trying to simulate the tabletop dice-rolling experience.
Unfortunately, moving away from “Baldur’s Gate’s” successful RPG formula toward an action-adventure template risks alienating the core D&D audience. Given the studio’s previous history, the game may be a blend of Ubisoft-style open-world systems and immersive sim creativity, citing influences like “Far Cry” and “Dark Messiah of Might & Magic.”
This Warlock’s Patron is a Mystery Box

“Warlock” will have players experience the world solely through the eyes of Katri, a warlock whose magical patron remains a mystery, though hints point to the legendary Raven Queen. Although the developers promise the story will be accessible to newcomers, longtime fans are rewarded with deep lore integration.
With no gameplay revealed yet, the true test will be whether Invoke can deliver on its systemic promises and redeem its reputation. Only time will tell if this team successfully pivots from a critical misfire to crafting a worthy, magic-focused entry in the D&D universe. “Warlock” represents one pillar of Wizards of the Coast’s major internal gaming push, alongside “Exodus,” the game inspired by “Mass Effect.”
The Road Ahead for Baldur’s Gate
For “Baldur’s Gate” fans, the future of the iconic franchise is now officially secure, but when can players actually expect to return to the Sword Coast? Wizards of the Coast president John Hight and Giant Skull leader Stig Asmussen recently discussed the series in an interview, confirming that “Baldur’s Gate 4” is absolutely happening. However, no specific timeline was offered for its arrival. After years of hopeful uncertainty, this vague yet thrilling news provides the community with an opportunity to celebrate, even if the party’s start time remains a mystery.
