Crystal Dynamics’ Staff is Getting Raided With More Layoffs For 2025
Crystal Dynamics is, unfortunately, laying off employees for the third time this year, impacting nearly thirty people. The studio describes these layoffs as a difficult but necessary reorganization to position itself for future projects. Furthermore, various departments have been impacted by these cuts. As the company restructures for its next chapter, one question remains: How many times can they reorganize before it just becomes disorganized?
Crystal Dynamics Loses its Luster Again
Crystal Dynamics explained these painful choices on LinkedIn while addressing its players. Specifically, their decision was made to optimize development on the next Tomb Raider game. Additionally, these layoffs help to shape the studio for future titles. Moreover, they expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the community and their partners. Ultimately, the studio’s latest decision follows a pattern of similar actions throughout the year.
Crystal Dynamics had its first round of cuts in March, letting seventeen people go to better align with its business needs. Microsoft followed in August, cancelling the Perfect Dark reboot that Crystal Dynamics was co-developing. With nearly thirty more people now out of work, his decision would lead to another undisclosed number of terminations. This number may be smaller than the industry-wide massacres seen at other giants. However, it represents a significant chunk for a studio that must be feeling stretched quite thin.
From Crystal Dynamics to Critical Mass
Even with all this internal turbulence, Crystal Dynamics has had little recent public output. Back in 2022, they announced a new Unreal Engine 5 Tomb Raider project. Since then, only a single, utterly unremarkable piece of concept art was released in early 2024. The repeated staff reductions and the long wait for a new game have led to questions about the internal mood at the studio. Whether these cuts are truly paving the way for a more efficient future remains unclear.
However, it’s possible the studio is simply rearranging the deck chairs on a ship that has been stuck in the development dock for years. Although the team undoubtedly possesses immense talent, the constant churn of saying goodbye to colleagues must be challenging. Hopefully, the next big reveal from Crystal Dynamics isn’t just another corporate restructuring announcement but a spectacular game.
