Epic Games Store is an online video game shop that hosts a variety of games for PC, Mac, and mobile. Console gamers, sadly, do not have access to the store. Each week since 2019, Epic has released free games that any user of their store is able to download for the device the game is compatible with, typically PC and occasionally mobile. Of course, Epic also offers pages of free games year-round, including Apex Legends, Asphalt Legends, Fortnite, and Genshin Impact. Not every player likes every available game, but every player should like free stuff. So what is here for the week of May 29 – June 5?

For this week, Epic Games Store has officially made available two games for its users, both for PC. The two games are nearly polar opposites of each other, yet could have the potential to reach popularity with a wide range of gamers. The two games are Limbo, developed by Playdead, and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, developed by Tiny Tina. The former is a well-received, dark, atmospheric puzzler, and the latter is a looter-shooter RPG with a solid critical rating.

Limbo earned critical acclaim for its dark, atmospheric style with minimalist storytelling that builds layers of horror in an entirely novel way. It has been free on Epic Games Store once before, in 2019, but typically it costs $10. Limbo has won a plethora of awards over the years since its 2010 release, including Best Horror Game from IGN, Best Visual Arts from the Game Developers Choice Awards, Technical Excellence from the Independent Games Festival, and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design at the D.I.C.E. Awards. It is considered one of the single most influential indie games in video game history.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a Borderlands spinoff that combines elements of the looter-shooter franchise with the base of tabletop RPGs and fantasy spellcasting. The action-RPG may sound chaotic, and quite frankly, it is, but it manages to make it all work out, with plenty for both Dungeons and Dragons and Borderlands fans to enjoy. Overall, its “strong” rating on OpenCritic and 4.6 out of 5 rating on Epic Store reflect its quality and enjoyment for fans of all tastes. Normally $59.99, grabbing the game for free now is a major get, especially since it has never been free before (though it is frequently discounted).
