5 Gaming Couples Who Could Not Survive Love Island
In many games, romantic relationships or gaming couples may develop as part of the story or as a bonus for all the romantic gamers out there who binge-watch every season of Love Island for two weeks (you know who you are). Often, it works out; however, there are times when the relationship seems too toxic to maintain, there’s no chemistry between the characters, or certain details seem too bizarre for audiences to conceptualize a relationship between the characters. Nonetheless, they happen. So, I’ve compiled a list of the worst gaming couples who’d be a total disaster on Love Island.
Bowser and the Mother of his Children (The Worst Gaming Couple IMO)
If you didn’t know, within the Mario world, Bowser is the ultimate antagonist and archnemesis to Mario. Throughout the decades since the conception of this world, Bowser fathered different offspring with an unnamed mother, considered one of the worst couplings in gaming history, and here’s why. Bowser’s a villain for a reason. He is inherently evil, spreading misfortune and trying to one-up Mario and friends any chance he gets. In total, he has 8 children, including Bowser Jr., which means he impregnated their mother 8 different times! And yet, he keeps kidnapping Princess Peach because he wants to marry her… He doesn’t seem like boyfriend material, let alone dad material. He’d be first to be booted off the island IMO!Â
Tharja and Robin

Fire Emblem is a fantastic game series where romance is sometimes an important component within the game, especially in Fire Emblem: Awakening. Robin is one of the main protagonists of Awakening, and Tharja is a dark mage who develops a massive crush on Robin. The issue is… their relationship begins with Tharja stalking Robin! Now I know a lot of romance novels that have desensitized us to this kind of behavior because we are obsessed with shipping fictional characters. However, it is still not okay! Tharja’s feelings feel more obsessive than anything else. And though Love Island has its issues when it comes to authenticity, Tharja definitely wouldn’t make it to the end.
Princess Elise and Sonic the Hedgehog
Enough said here. Many people have an issue with this relationship. It is somewhat sweet, if you can get over the whole bestiality aspect. However, it just couldn’t work. Besides the fact that Elise is a human, there was such poor dialogue throughout the game, which makes you cringe even more. And poor Amy is left in the dust! This was a misstep for Sega, one that no one talks about.
Kratos and Freya

This one is a bit controversial and probably not a lot agree, but hear me out! The ending of The God of War and the first half of God of War Ragnarök had Freya murderously angry with Kratos, blaming him for the death of her son, Baldur. It is this mere fact that incinerates any desire to ship these two characters, and I know there are so many people out there who do. Call it a doomed fate, but Freya’s headspace bore no room for a potential romance with a man who genuinely cares for her. I imagine Freya’s and Kratos’ relationship on Love Island would lead to frequent fights that would definitely turn physical.
Sindel and Shao Khan
Now this couple bears no introduction, and I think many would agree with my stance on this. First of all, Shao Khan killed Sindel’s actual husband and forced her to marry him (definite toxic vibes coming from Shao Khan). From the beginning, it was a doomed marriage, with Sindel coming out last. In her defense, this was all Shao Khan, and I don’t have to tell you why he’d never win Love Island.
This may sound a bit cheesy, but there isn’t any such thing as a perfect relationship. However, everyone should have standards for what they expect from one. And though Love Island isn’t the best, or even the most ideal place to meet someone and start a relationship, the idea of finding love and a healthy relationship will always captivate us as humans. Lord knows we love watching it happen on TV!
