Renowned Actor Jim Carrey May Return for “Sonic 4”
Jim Carrey is reportedly in talks to return as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in the fourth installment of the live-action Sonic movie. Despite a desire to retire in 2022 but returning for 2024’s “Sonic 3”, Jim Carrey apparently loves the movie Sonic crew and prefers working on movies with “interesting” content. “Sonic 4” will come out in theaters in March 2027.
Where Did Jim Carrey’s Robotnik Go?
Dr. Robotnik, in the “Sonic 3” movie, sacrifices himself to save Earth from annihilation by staying in the Eclipse Cannon, created by his grandfather Dr. Gerald Robotnik, to divert it away from Earth. Robotnik’s sacrifice made the movie a send-off to the goofy doctor and the well-established actor and comedian. If Carrey returns for “Sonic 4,” Dr. Robotnik will most likely be the movie’s central villain.
“Sonic 3” is loosely based on Sonic Adventure 2, which introduced Shadow the Hedgehog as Sonic’s main rival. In Sonic Adventure 2, Gerald Robotnik created Shadow in search of a cure for his terminally ill granddaughter Maria. In both the movie and the game, GUN forces kill Maria, setting the motions for Shadow’s misguided quest for revenge. While Keanu Reeves voiced Shadow, Jim Carrey portrayed both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik in “Sonic 3.”
Unlike his wacky movie counterpart, Gerald Robotnik became dejected and angry after Maria’s death and after GUN forces captured him. His final message was to get revenge on humanity prior to GUN forces executing him.
What We Know About Sonic 4 So Far

“Sonic 4” will surely feature Amy Rose, the beloved hammer-wielding pink hedgehog, and Metal Sonic, Sonic’s robotic lookalike and archrival (prior to Shadow the Hedgehog’s debut in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2).
News of Dr. Robotnik’s, and Jim Carrey’s,supposed return to the Sonic movies came from a leaker known as Daniel “Daniel RPK” Richtman. Richtman reported the news via his Patreon page. “Sonic 4” may possibly be officially titled “Sonic CD.”
“Sonic 4’s” story will loosely take on the story of 1993’s Sonic CD. Sonic CD featured the respected debuts of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic. The game was on the Sega CD and precedes 1992’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis. This means that Sonic CD technically takes place after 1991’s Sonic the Hedgehog.
The first live action “Sonic” movie, released in 2020, was a breath of fresh air during the COVID-19 pandemic. Revealed in 2019, the movie introduced Ugly Sonic, but Sonic fans (and people who hated when animated characters get ugly live-action redesigns) pushed for Paramount to redesign Sonic into something more pleasing to the eyes.
About Sonic CD
In Sonic CD, rather than seven Chaos Emeralds, Sonic must gather the seven Time Stones, which give him the ability to control time. Sonic time travels throughout the multiverse to stop Dr. Robotnik and Metal Sonic from taking over Little Planet.
Sonic CD is considered to be one of the best Sonic games of all time, in spite of the differences in soundtracks from the Japanese/European/PAL version to the North American version. The difference in soundtracks resulted from Sega of America hiring composers to replace the game’s soundtrack when the game arrived in America.
