Exciting KOTOR 2 Remake Was In Development – Is It Still Happening?
Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most beloved “Star Wars” games of all time, but its sequel, Knights of the Old Republic 2 (KOTOR 2), wasn’t so acclaimed. A significant portion of the game was cut, leading many fans to say that the game feels unfinished. However, there might have been a remake in development that could have solved these problems – and it might still be happening.
The KOTOR 2 Cut Content
The supposedly-upcoming remake of the first Knights of the Old Republic game has been in development for years and still shows no signs of a release date. However, there has been no official cancellation, so the game is presumably still in development. Meanwhile, while things are rough for the KOTOR 1 remake, they are full of potholes for the KOTOR 2 remake, which might never happen.
In 2022, the trailer for the Knights of the Old Republic 2 remake on the Nintendo Switch announced that it would include “Restored Content DLC.” Fans went nuts, believing that the game’s cut content would finally be released and they could play the game as it was originally intended – but when the game came out on the Switch, there was no extra content at all. Lawsuits followed, and the whole thing devolved into a murky mess.
Is All Lost?
Well, there might still be hope. According to IGN, new information has been unearthed. A game with the code name “Project Juliet” turned out to be a full-on remake of KOTOR 2. Douglas Reilly, vice president of Lucasfilm Games, stated that “we were going to do a full remake of KOTOR 2 with modern art, modern gameplay, you know, keep the story and the characters and the general—the general content of KOTOR 2, but remake it . . . with updated graphics and all those kind of things”
Yes, the remake would have included the cut content, but is it still in production? Reilly said that it’s “technically on the roadmap” in March of 2025, but “we’re starting with the remake of KOTOR 1.” Given the troubled production that the first game’s remake has had, it could be years before a Knights of the Old Republic 2 remake gets its chance to shine.
So Do We Really Just Sit and Wait for News?
At the moment, that’s all we can do. The remakes may or may not happen. In the meantime, you can play the original versions of both games on PC, IOS/Android, Xbox One/Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 1 and 2. You’ll find that they’re still worthwhile experiences, even without the cut content.
