Nintendo Not Rushing To Announce Games Like 3D Mario To Sell With Switch 2

Nintendo is one of the biggest names in gaming and has the number one hybrid console. Naturally, with the Nintendo Switch 2 being released soon, the excitement can hardly be contained. Around the world, Nintendo has sold over 836 million consoles. With every console, Nintendo has led with some of its most popular games. Since their first console, Nintendo has normally led with their own born hero, Mario, in a Super Mario game. This time, things are different, and it seems that they are not all too eager to release information on their 3D Mario game, which is not their next launch title.

Nintendo Switch 2 Defies Tradition With 3D Mario

Since the first Nintendo console, it included gaming titles like Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, and Clu Clu Land. For their next system, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System brought Super Mario World. Who can forget that the Nintendo 64 had the remarkable title, Super Mario 64? Here is where things differ slightly, as with the Wii, Wii U came with Wii Sports as well as no launch game. The Nintendo Switch was released on March 3rd, 2017, with several gaming titles. However, none of them included our iconic red and green-hatted heroes. They did have The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 1-2 Switch.

With the release date coming for the Nintendo Switch 2, gamers can’t wait to hear more about what is going to be offered. Most of the news about the Switch 2 is its launch title, which comes with it, Mario Kart World. There are other titles that Nintendo is sharing, such as Donkey Kong Bananza, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond- Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Kirby Air Riders, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, Drag X Drive, Welcome Tour, and The Duskbloods. But Nintendo isn’t sharing much about their 3D Mario or other similar titles.

Dashed Hopes

Since the Nintendo Switch 2 information has been coming out, news of 3D Mario was expected to be given in the April Nintendo Direct, but nothing was given. It could be that Nintendo feels that the world’s best plumber is making an adequate appearance, speeding across the world in Mario Kart World. It’s odd, but Nintendo is staying very quiet about the future of such a staple character as Mario having his own game for their new system. Could it be that it’s not ready to be shown? Or are they saving it for a later surprise to keep sales going at a different time?

This may seem like grim news for Mario fans as they will have to wait. The last time we had Mario in the saddle was Super Mario Odyssey, which came out on the Switch eight years ago. He has returned in several other games like Super Mario Bros., Wonder, and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, which came out last year in 2024. However, we have seen him on his own turf, taking it to Bowser.

Big Bad Bowser Makes Us Wait

Speaking of Bowser… The American president of Nintendo is Doug Bowser. He reported to CNN, “Stay tuned, you know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform.”

Pre-Order Blues

The Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders are available if you can still find any in stock. Some of the larger US retailers started the sales at midnight on April 24th, while others began that morning. Several of these stores, like Walmart, Target, and GameStop, were sold out almost at once. In checking, there weren’t any pre-orders in stock soon after, but that doesn’t mean there may be some available soon, as some GameStop stores still had some in-store pre-orders available.

There are a few things to keep in mind about all this. Nintendo hasn’t officially announced that a new 3D Mario will be released, and that will be its title. All we have are teasers like the one Bowser gave above. For the time being, we will have to enjoy steering Mario and friends cross-country in the new Mario Kart World, hoping that we won’t have to wait long for news on what Nintendo has coming next for our favorite twin plumbing brothers.
