Palworld Aims for 2026 Launch While Nintendo’s Lawsuit Looms
While Nintendo and The Pokémon Company’s legal battle against Pocketpair continues to make waves, the Palworld developers are apparently keeping their heads down and focusing on what’s next. In a recent video update, Pocketpair announced that the wildly popular monster-taming survival game is slated to leave Early Access and officially hit version 1.0 sometime in 2026. Yes, you read that right—2026. So, you’ve got plenty of time to get your affairs in order.

Why the Long Wait for Palworld 1.0?
According to John “Bucky” Buckley, Pocketpair’s communications director, the team is well aware that Palworld isn’t exactly the most polished gem in the Steam library. “It’s no secret that Palworld has a lot of quirks and jank, and we want to take the time to properly address those before releasing the game,” he explained. It’s a refreshingly honest take. Most of us who’ve sunk hours into the game have probably fallen through the map at least once or watched a Pal get stuck in a hilariously unfortunate loop.
The plan is to spend the remainder of this year and the next tidying up the code, squashing bugs, and generally making the game less… well, janky. This means that after the upcoming winter update, things might get a little quiet on the new content front. Buckley admitted this winter’s update won’t be as massive as last year’s Feybreak patch, but he did tease “a few surprises.” So, don’t put away your Pal Spheres just yet.

The Elephant in the Room: Nintendo’s Lawsuit
Of course, you can’t talk about Palworld without mentioning the massive legal storm brewing overhead. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are not exactly thrilled with Pocketpair’s success, and they’ve been methodically building a patent infringement case against them. The lawsuit revolves around several patents, some of which were conveniently filed after Palworld exploded in popularity.
One of the more eyebrow-raising patents is for the mechanic of summoning a character and letting it fight. Yes, a patent for the very core of monster-taming games. IP lawyers have called the granting of this patent “outrageous” and an “embarrassing failure of the US patent system.” It’s so broad that it could theoretically apply to everything from Digimon to Persona. It seems Nintendo is trying to patent the very concept of fun, one broad legal document at a time.
In response, Pocketpair has been quietly tweaking Palworld‘s mechanics. A patch last November changed how Pals are summoned—they now just materialize beside you, rather than being thrown from a sphere. Another update altered the gliding mechanic. It’s a clear attempt to sidestep the specific language of Nintendo’s patents, but whether it will be enough to appease the legal titans remains to be seen.

Pocketpair’s Stance: Business as Usual
Despite the legal drama, Pocketpair seems determined to carry on. Buckley mentioned that while the company is experimenting with other game ideas in smaller teams, the vast majority of resources are still dedicated to Palworld. He even noted that the lawsuit “came as a shock” and was “something that no one even considered” during development—a statement that, depending on your level of cynicism, is either endearingly naive or a masterful bit of PR.
Regardless, the strategy seems clear: keep improving the game and delivering what the players want. With a massive 1.0 update planned to coincide with the full release in 2026, Pocketpair is signaling that they’re in this for the long haul. The developers have a huge amount of content planned, and they believe that taking the time to fix the game’s foundations will ultimately result in a better experience for everyone.
So, as the legal gears grind on, the Palworld team is focused on their 2026 launch. It’s a bold move, essentially betting that they can outlast the legal pressure and deliver a game so polished and feature-rich that the “Pokémon with guns” label becomes a distant memory. Will they succeed? Only time will tell. But for now, it’s back to building bases and hoping our Pals don’t glitch through the floor.
