The Steam Winter Sale is upon us, which means thousands of indie games are on sale. But which ones are actually worth buying? Well, I could name hundreds of worthy indie games for this list, but for now, let’s talk about five indie games you can pick up at a discount during the Steam Winter Sale and should give you plenty of enjoyment.

1. VVVVVV

This awesome platformer with the weird name is normally an affordable $4.99, but for the Steam Winter Sale, the price has dropped to $1.24. That’s right you can grab one of the best 2D platformers ever for less than two dollars. You flip gravity around through spikes, moving platforms, weird obstacles, and more spikes, and to call it addictive is an understatement. It’s difficult, but in the best kind of way, where you can see yourself improving as you keep playing. 

2. Undertale

If you somehow haven’t played Undertale, Christmas is the best time to start, since Undertale has a festive Christmas town that’s sure to get you in the holiday spirit. In addition, this game features gorgeous music, memorable characters, and an underlying morality system guaranteed to mess with your mind. You can currently pick it up for $2.49, which is a pretty awesome deal for such an undeniable indie classic.

3. Crypt of the Necro-Dancer

Do you love roguelikes and rhythm games? Then Crypt of the Necro-Dancer is the game for you. While it’s normally $14.99, it’s now $2.99 for the Steam Winter Sale, and you can’t argue with a deal like that. Charge your way through monsters in randomly-generated dungeons while dancing to the catchy score – or you can even import your own music for an extra challenge.

4. Stardew Valley

If you prefer your games less intense and more chill, then give Stardew Valley a try. It’s currently on sale for $8.99, and you get tons of content for your money. Build your farm, befriend and romance the locals, discover secrets, and explore the mines. Moreover, this game is still being updated, meaning that it periodically gets new content, so you’ll never be bored.

5. Cult of the Lamb

With the massive Woolhaven DLC coming next month, this is a perfect time to get to know the original game. Cult of the Lamb is currently 50% off, meaning you can get it for $12.49. Perfectly blending the cute and the morbid, this game combines a sim with a dungeon crawler as you grow your cult and care for them while fighting off demons and other monsters. It’s an unforgettable experience.
