‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Trailer Brings Fun Surprises and Yoshi!
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is upon us in a few short months. Nintendo put out a Direct for the highly anticipated sequel to 2023’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which gave audiences a new trailer for Mario’s journey into the stars. So, what’s in store for “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”? What are some of the new surprises we have? Well, one of those surprises comes in the form of an adorable green dinosaur.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” and Yoshi!
In the latest Nintendo Direct for the movie, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto introduced a new trailer for the film. The first trailer, which debuted in November, had fans excited to see Rosalina and Bowser Jr., but Yoshi was nowhere to be seen. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” had an end credits scene that seemed to be teasing the beloved little dinosaur hatching out of an iconic Yoshi egg, so fans have been eagerly awaiting their first look at Yoshi in “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.”
“After the first trailer was released,” Miyamoto said, “people were asking, ‘is Yoshi not going to be in the movie?’ Of course he’s in it! For over thirty years, Yoshi has been a significant part of Mario’s adventures.” Indeed, Yoshi made his debut way back in Super Mario World, where Mario rode on him, and he could use his long tongue to eat enemies. Yoshi proved himself so popular that he got his own adventure in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, which launched Yoshi’s own series of games, though he continues to play roles in the mainline Mario games.
The new trailer centers around Yoshi’s antics. After Mario and Luigi discover him in a moment that should generate a lot of “awwws” in movie theaters, he joins up with the heroes. There’s another adorable moment where Yoshi introduces himself to Toad – after eating Toad’s candy apple with his trademark long tongue. “So some dinosaur just shows up and he’s now part of the group?” Toad asks.
Other Fun Surprises for Mario Fans
While Yoshi is the trailer’s obvious highlight, the trailer also delivers other surprises that longtime Mario fans will recognize. “Many familiar characters, including Yoshi, will play active roles in ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.’ We hope you’re looking forward to it,” said Miyamoto. Indeed, sharp-eyed Mario fans should notice some other familiar faces in the trailer besides just Yoshi.
For example, there’s a shot in the trailer that shows Peach fighting Birdo, who debuted in the Japanese game Doki Doki Panic, which was reskinned into the American version of Super Mario Bros 2 for the NES. Birdo has since become a staple Mario character. There’s another scene in the trailer where Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi are running from Lakitu, who might be best known for fishing your kart out of tight situations in the Mario Kart games.
However, the most interesting tease comes at the end of the trailer, where Yoshi is trying to fight off a realistic dinosaur. Mario fans will remember that there were realistic dinosaurs in Super Mario Odyssey, which means that “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is digging down deep for Easter eggs. However, viewers who happen to look to the side during that clip will see that Toad is holding the baby versions of Mario and Luigi. Did Mario and Luigi turn into babies? This also makes for a fun reference, since Yoshi protects baby Mario in the Yoshi’s Island games.
Bring on “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” opens on April 1st, and there are still plenty of questions to be answered. What is Rosalina’s role in the movie? Will Bowser grow back into his regular size? Will we see other familiar faces like Daisy? Whatever the answers are, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” looks like a worthy adaptation of the beloved games and a worthy sequel to the excellent “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
