New God of War Series Brings a Spartan’s Journey to Screen

If the rumors are true, then fans should prepare themselves for Amazon Prime Video’s God of War series, which will finally begin filming in March 2026. This exciting development has immediately prompted a massive question from the global fanbase, with everyone wanting to know which actor will have the honor of portraying the legendary Kratos. So, who could possibly embody such an iconic character, a role demanding immense physicality and a powerful, commanding presence?

A Pantheon of Potential Actors

Not just any actor can play Kratos in the new God of War series, as only a select few possess the necessary combination of size, strength, and gravitas. Movie insider John Campea recently explored these very rumors in a video, breaking down the most popular names currently circulating online. His discussion included some fairly obvious candidates alongside a few more unexpected fancasts.

Moreover, he presented a complete list featuring several well-known actors from the world of action and fantasy for the iconic role in the God of War series. Namely, Winston Duke from Black Panther and Joe Manganiello from True Blood are in the mix. The original voice actor of Krato in the games, Christopher Judge, is along with Manu Bennett of Spartacus fame. Rounding out his muscular list, Jason Momoa, Travis Fimmel from Vikings, Olivier Richters, and Dave Bautista are also potential picks for the part. Lastly, Campea even entertained the wild card suggestion of WWE legend Triple H for the part.

A Heavenly Body Is Required

While some choices seem more logical than others, a few appear to be included just for fun. The core challenge involves finding an actor for the God of War series who perfectly matches the character’s imposing image. While Judge undoubtedly has the perfect voice and emotional depth for Kratos, could he maintain the demanding physicality for a long-term live-action role?

Similarly, Dave Bautista, although still a large man, has intentionally scaled down from his earlier bodybuilding physique. Although Jason Momoa feels like a natural fit for the role, online sentiment seems to lean more toward Winston Duke or the rugged Travis Fimmel. Lastly, Olivier Richters was quickly dismissed by fans, who argued the seven-foot-tall actor is too massive and lacks the right proportions for the Ghost of Sparta.

The God of War‘s New War

The show’s creative direction and its place within the larger narrative will influence the final decision. Is the God of War series adapting the original Greek era games, or will it follow the more recent Norse saga? This single detail will drastically alter the type of actor they need to cast. Whether the story will feature a young, rage-filled Kratos from the past or the older, wearier version players know from the 2018 soft reboot has yet to be disclosed. However, the answer to that question makes a world of difference for the production team.
