Nine Sols is a 2-D Metroidvania game that was developed by RedCandleGames and published on May 29, 2024. It is inspired by the Soulslike genre and its direct comparison becomes with Hollow Knight. Nine Sols, however, retains its novelty by being a folklore story-driven game that is emphasized heavily by Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice combat system. The lore of the game is rich and immersive with a beautiful world design to compliment it.
Story & Setting
The story of Nine Sols follows the story of Yi, a pragmatic scientist, and a martial artist on the journey of revenge against the Nukan Man society, also known as the Sols. He was betrayed by society in the past and then with the help of his new friend Shuanshuan, he is committed to bringing the Sols down. The storytelling of the game is immersive and always keeps the players interested. Characters do not feel dull and feel like they have a personality and depth to them. This allows the players to care about the characters and improves the immersion experience.
Gameplay
Nine Sols is a 2D Platformer Metroidvania-style game that is similar to Hollow Knight with combat greatly inspired by Sekiro, so the gameplay is similar. It challenges players by making players focus on defense through deflecting and parrying enemy attacks. This mechanic although hard to master is extremely satisfying and makes the game worth playing. Eventually, through their journey, players will unlock four different styles of situational parry moves.
Some parries require players to be in the air, and some require you to time and charge up your deflect. The game also allows players to simply dodge the enemy attacks but deflections are extremely rewarding. Successful parries provide players with Qi charge which can be used to perform powerful offensive abilities. The combat loop is extremely satisfying and challenging, requiring players to deflect and dodge enemy attacks while keeping their eyes open for any opening.
The platforming experience of the game is also top-notch. The game provides players with various options like grappling hooks, double jumps, and dashes to overcome obstacles. The environment and the surroundings are also perfectly detailed, which makes the platforming and exploration much more exciting. The game also comes with a skill tree and a variety of abilities that players can choose from according to their playstyle.
Level & Boss Design
Each level of Nine Sols is unique and keeps things fresh by providing various challenges and environmental hazards in between. There will be timed hazards, chase sequences, and puzzles on various levels. Each level ends with a boss fight that compliments the style and mechanics of that level. Each boss fight is unique and features a different art style and mechanic. If a person is a fan of Hollow Knight or Sekiro then this game is a must to play.
