Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo’s online subscription service, has just added three new games to its Sega Genesis collection. For years, one of the main perks of having a Nintendo Switch Online membership has been its large collection of retro games from various old systems. The collections get updated regularly with new games, so let’s look at the newest additions for the Genesis collection.
Streets of Rage
Probably the most notable of the three new games, Streets of Rage is the first game in the classic Streets of Rage series. While its sequel has been on Nintendo Switch Online ever since they first added Genesis games, the first game has been strangely absent until now. In Streets of Rage, you play as one of three young former cops, and you must punch and kick your way through hordes of minions as you fight a crime syndicate that has taken over the city. The series is especially notable for its dance music, which was composed by Yuzo Koshiro.
Super Thunder Blade
In this arcade port, you pilot a helicopter through a classic-style shoot-’em-up with two kinds of gameplay. You get to shoot through 3D stages that show off background scaling similar to Space Harrier, along with more traditional overhead 2D stages. The controls for the 3D stages can take some practice to master, especially aiming at the enemies, but the game’s addictive arcade nature should make you want to try again when you inevitably crash. As a Genesis launch title, this game showed off what the system could do.
ESWAT: City Under Seige
In this sequel to the Cyber Police ESWAT arcade game, you are a cop taking on endless swarms of criminals. While you start off armed with only a gun and no protection, you eventually don the ICE Combat Suit, which can be equipped with different weapons. The jumping controls take a bit of adjustment, and the difficulty is rather high. You will be taking a lot of bullets before you advance, but once again, its great music and addictive gameplay will make you want to keep playing.
Nintendo Switch Online’s Future
We know that GameCube games will be heading to the Nintendo Switch 2’s version of Nintendo Switch Online, but after Super Soccer was removed from the Super Nintendo collection last month, how long any game will last is uncertain. As such, it is recommended that you try out any game you are interested in as soon as you can. Since these three games are all arcade simple, you can pick them up and try them out whenever you want, and you don’t have to invest a lot of time.
