Nintendo: The Definitive Awesome Timeline to 2024

Nintendo has always surprised us, since its beginnings, founded by Fusajirō Yamauchi in 1889, began marketing card games, hanafuda cards, from Kyoto in Japan. After expanding its market in playing cards in 1907, Sekiryo Kaneda adopted the surname “Yamauchi” as the son-in-law of its founder to take over the CEO of the company.

From that moment on, the expansion to other lines of business began, until in 1977 he launched his first video game console marketed only in Japan, the Color TV Game. All its consoles and titles since then have had an epic impact on the chronology of the development of video games and as a way of life.

It currently has several subsidiaries and franchises that ensure not only honorary positions in the video game industry, but that its followers and fans are found in all parts of the earth, and an extensive catalog, as of today 32 titles on its official website and 5 releases, making clear the success of the company.

How Did They Become What We Now Know as Nintendo?

In the early sixties, it changed its name to Nintendo Company, Ltd. thanks to its new agreement with Disney that allowed it to sell millions of card games with its characters. Still, after a few years of bonanza, the company entered one of its worst moments where it unsuccessfully ventured into various businesses such as rice, and cab service among others.

1970 saw the beginning of the manufacture of electronic toys with the optoelectronic Nintendo Beam Gun, designed by Masayuki Uemura. But the market and the competition with Bandai did not make it easy.

Seeing the success of companies like Atari and Magnavox, Yamauchi as president of the company acquired the distribution rights of the Magnavox Odyssey system for its diffusion in Japan, and after its first console launched exclusively for the public of his country Japan, Nintendo everything would be a new stage.

Which Consoles Launched Nintendo to Success?

In 1979 Minoru Arakawa, son-in-law of director Hiroshi Yamauchi, inaugurated Nintendo of America in New York, starting with the coin-operated games business, from that moment on the hardware allowed Nintendo to reach directly to cinemas, cafes, bars, barbershops, etc.

In 1980 the “GAME & WATCH” product line began to be sold in Japan, the first portable LCD video games with a microprocessor, and only 5 years later came one of the biggest successes in the video game industry with the Nintendo Entertainment System.
The NES-101, the Family Computer, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Game Boy, Nintendo DS, Wii, and even the latest Nintendo Switch are platforms that host countless adventures created by the company.
