Recently, Nintendo announced their latest product, the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. This will be a collection of classic NES titles with over a hundred speedrunning challenges added. This collection will be released exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on July 18. While the digital edition will cost $29.99, the Deluxe Set with collectibles will cost $59.99
For both Nintendo games and gaming in general, speedrunning has been a key challenge players have created for themselves. However, this collection holds many new surprises and features that impress even the most die-hard Nintendo fan. Here is a rundown of all the biggest details for the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition.
The Games and Challenges of the Nintendo World Championships

According to Nintendo’s website, the Nintendo World Championships- NES Edition will primarily be a collection of 13 classic Nintendo Entertainment System games. These include Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Metroid, Kid Icarus, and others. Many of these titles went on to begin Nintendo’s biggest franchises, so this is a nice homage to their roots.
However, what makes this a unique collection is the speedrunning challenges added. Nintendo created over 150 challenges across these games, such as completing levels, killing all enemies, and reaching goals within a certain time frame. Of course, players can also test themselves on how quickly they can clear the game itself. Many of these challenges can only be unlocked after completing others. Lastly, Nintendo added a grading system, so players always have room to improve.
Online Competition
While the collection is already fairly impressive, Nintendo added even more features to the game for friendly competition between players. In Party Mode, up to 8 players can compete against each other for speedrunning challenges. There will also be online leaderboards that Nintendo will update weekly for players with a Nintendo Switch Online Membership. With titles such as Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart, Nintendo has made a name for themselves in fun multiplayer games for hangouts.
As stated above, speedrunning has always been one of the most revered challenges within gaming. To this day, gamers look for even the most hidden glitches to shave time, and tournaments are held with tens of thousands in prizes. Speedrunning has evolved from a hobby among gamers to a legitimate esport with tournaments run by the Retro World Series.
The Deluxe Set
In addition to the collection and competitive features, Nintendo will release a “Deluxe Set” with various collectibles. This collection will contain a gold-colored replica cartridge, 13 art cards, and five pins. This memorabilia will be a staple in any Nintendo fan’s collection. At the time of writing, only the digital version of the game is available to preorder, while the Deluxe Set will be available soon.
For an authentic way of enjoying these games, Nintendo also offered replica NES controllers for Switch Online Members. The Nintendo Entertainment System revolutionized the industry after the infamous Gaming Crash of 1983, so it will always be a foundational console in video game history.
