Sonic X Shadow Generations Will Have No Guns

Shadow Generations. Guns.

During Sony’s State of Play event, Sonic fans would first hear about Sonic X Shadow Generations. What’s interesting about the new Sonic game is that it isn’t necessarily a sequel to the 2011 game, Sonic Generations. Instead, it’s a product bundle that includes the remastered version of the game alongside a new Shadow the Hedgehog game. What’s more? This new game, Shadow Generations, will be released on various platforms on October 25th, 2024.

Specifically, the new game follows anti-hero Shadow, who returns as the main character in a Sonic game since 2005’s Shadow the Hedgehog. As a sequel, Shadow must fight against the returning villain Black Doom from taking over the world. Moreover, Shadow Generations takes place during the events of Sonic Generations, meaning other iconic Sonic characters may show up in the game as well.

The Creative Design of Shadow Generations

As a platformer, Shadow Generationsgameplay switches between side-scrolling and 3D. However, the game departs from Sonic Generations as it borrows the open-world gameplay in 2021’s Sonic Frontiers. Additionally, Shadow’s controls are similar to Sonic’s except players can use his “Chaos Control” ability to access hidden areas and freeze objects in his surroundings.

Likewise, players can play both Generations games simultaneously whenever they want. Similar to Sonic Generations, the level designs in Shadow’s game are drawn from older Sonic games. For instance, the game includes levels similar to some found in games such as 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2, 2003’s Sonic Heroes, the previously mentioned Shadow the Hedgehog, and 2006’s Sonic the Hedgehog.

Currently, Shadow Generations is part of a specific marketing campaign for Shadow the Hedgehog titled Fearless: Year of Shadow. Specifically, Katsuyuki Shigihara directed the campaign and helped design its counterpart game, Sonic Generations. Overall, the Sonic team would take levels of past Sonic games they found the most interesting to retell Shadow’s history.

Shadow Generations Won’t Have Any Guns

Although Shadow used guns in his 2005 game, SEGA decided to put the guns down in what may have been a shocking move when the news was first announced. Outside of his iconic roller blades, Shadow’s main feature lies in his weaponry, which may possibly be the game’s most memorable aspect even today.

So, what led to Sega’s decision to take away Shadow’s guns? He doesn’t need them. In an interview with the head of the Sonic Team, Takashi Lizuka, he stated Shadow only used them out of necessity rather than want and that Shadow was powerful without them. Considering Shadow’s ability with the powerful Chaos Emeralds, Lizuka may be right in his opinion.

What Else Comes With Sonic X Shadow Generations

Surprisingly, SEGA isn’t the first video game distribution company to introduce bundles to the gaming world. For instance, before SEGA, Nintendo released their own bundling pack in 2021 by re-releasing 2013’s Super Mario 3D World along with the name game at the time, Bowser’s Fury. Following Nintendo’s success with their bundle, it’s a safe bet that Sonic X Shadow Generations will be a hit too.

SEGA included pre-order bonus content where players can get a new skin based on an early Shadow the Hedgehog design. In addition to the skin, SEGA released a booklet containing information about Robotnik’s creation of the black hedgehog in full detail.

In other news, a group of artists known as Studio Giggex plans to release ‘Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings’ in late 2024. This three-episode animated miniseries is a prologue to the 2024 game and will also be released alongside the game.
