Null from Echoes of Wisdom is the latest big bad to grace The Legend of Zelda franchise. Very few times has anyone other than Ganondorf been the main villain of an entry to this series, so it’s a rare honor that has been bestowed upon Null. However, even those unfamiliar with the franchise know of Ganondorf and know that, much like Bowser in the Super Mario franchise, is by and large the only final boss. With that in mind, many might be wondering just who Null from Echoes of Wisdom really is. Light spoilers ahead.
Who Null from Echoes of Wisdom Is
Null is the final boss of Echoes of Wisdom. It is responsible for the rifts that arose and swallowed up Link, Ganondorf, the King of Hyrule, and so many others. His power is said to be greater than that of anyone else’s, which is why he’s been hidden away. Null exists in the void, which was before Hyrule. When Hyrule was created, the three golden goddesses (Nayru, Farore, and Din) used the Tri-Force to seal him away because he was both too powerful and too villainous.
When Hyrule’s version of The Big Bang began to take place, Null consumed all the energy and snuffed out the creation of life before it could begin. His ultimate goal then, and when he returns in Echoes of Wisdom, was to consume everything and persist in the void. There needed to be nothing so that Null could continue to be all there was in this void. The goddesses created Hyrule manually to place over the top of Null, but that wasn’t enough. Thus, the Tri-Force was brought into the picture. That is also when the Tris were created, as even the Tri-Force wasn’t quite enough to completely hold Null at bay.
Why Null is Important
Null from Echoes of Wisdom is a brand-new character. A lot of games in The Legend of Zelda do have new characters and even new villains, but those are usually not the main bosses. Think of Ghirahim from Skyward Sword or Zant from Twilight Princess. Those are prime examples of villains who aren’t Ganondorf, but they weren’t the main villain of their game anyway. Someone else was above them. Null is a brand-new villain, but he is also the main enemy here. That’s a rarity.
In The Legend of Zelda, there have largely been just four: Ganondorf (who is the villain most of the time), Demise, Majora, and Vaati. If we want to get technical, Demise is the first iteration of Ganon, so there have really only been three. Null makes a fourth or fifth, depending on how you look at it. The last new villain was either Demise in 2011 or Vaati in 2004. Either way, it’s been a long time since a new enemy has arisen in Hyrule. Based on the Echoes of Wisdom storyline, Null has technically been there since before Hyrule was even formed. Regardless, he’s a new entry to the games if not the timeline.
In Conclusion
It is rare for The Legend of Zelda to use anyone but Ganondorf as the main villain. They ironically used him as the midway villain and gave the Zelda lore a brand-new character. Null is exciting, interesting, and most of all, important to the overarching storyline. That was not expected but is a major reason why Echoes of Wisdom was such a fun and surprising entry to the franchise. Nintendo, which has offices in Washington, published this title.
