According to a recent Twitter/X post by ‘Nintendeal,’ the developers of Mario & Luigi: Brothership are Octopath Traveler’s Acquire. The developers of Brothership have been a mystery ever since the game was revealed in June of this year, after the series’ original developers AlphaDream shut down in October of 2019. Brothership is set to release next month.
Octopath Developer
Octopath Traveler, released for Nintendo Switch in 2018, was developed as a collaboration between Acquire and Square Enix. It was developed using Unreal Engine 4. The game was successful enough that two other games in the series have been released to date. The sequel Octopath Traveler II was released last year, and the mobile-exclusive prequel Champions of the Continent released worldwide in 2022. Both of these follow-ups were also developed by Acquire and Square Enix, as well as being developed in Unreal Engine 4.
AlphaDream
AlphaDream was the original developer of the Mario & Luigi series, with the games being published by Nintendo. Despite the series’ popularity, in October 2019, AlphaDream declared bankruptcy, and the company closed following this. The final game they worked on was Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, alongside Sega, Success Corporation, Yuke’s, and Racjin. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 was one of the last two games in its respective series. In January 2020, Nintendo filed for a new Mario & Luigi trademark, but no announcements were made.
Direct Surprise
The June 2024 Nintendo Direct opened with the surprise reveal of Mario & Luigi: Brothership. It’s set to release on November 4th of this year, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. On Sunday, Nintendeal posted a picture of the back cover of Brothership’s physical case, which states the game’s engine is Unreal Engine. It isn’t known yet which version of Unreal Engine Brothership was developed. However, that is another link between Acquire and Brothership.
Reveals and Leaks
On Monday, Nintendeal posted a screenshot of the intellectual property rights for Brothership. Then, on Tuesday, they posted about the game’s ROM being leaked, much like with Tears of the Kingdom. While the screenshot in Monday’s post credited Nintendo and Acquire as the authors of the game, the screenshot in Tuesday’s post does not list a developer. As of yet, neither Nintendo nor Acquire has confirmed or denied whether Acquire is the developer of Brothership.
Final Thoughts
Acquire has a long history of games, from their Way of the Samurai and Tenchu series to their collaboration with Square Enix on the Octopath Traveler series. While they aren’t the original developers of the Mario & Luigi series, fans of the series are overall excited and optimistic to see how the series’ new developers handle this newest entry. Whether it’s confirmed to be developed by Acquire or by another studio, it’s exciting to see the series brought back after 5 years. Total Apex will continue coverage on Brothership, so stay tuned.
