Dungeons and Dragons, or DnD, is the most popular tabletop RPG ever released. It is currently in its fifth edition, but will soon be receiving a major rules overhaul. OneDnD is a set of materials that will change the core text of the players’ handbook while remaining backward-compatible with the rest of the fifth edition. It is an important addition to the game, and here’s what you need to know about it.
What’s So Good About OneDnd?
OneDnd is the result of extensive research into what players like and dislike about DnD. It aims to make the Players Handbook more easily understandable, and better balance out some of the early-game difficulty that is present in a Dnd campaign. As part of this, most classes are receiving a set of changes to their core functionality. Dungeons and Dragons is not the easiest game to get into and understand, and this seeks to remedy that a little bit.
What Changes Will the Druid Class Receive?
Druids have long been a fan-favorite class, as they allow a player to change into an animal form, summon beasts to help them in battle, and cast powerful spells. DnD‘s unique ability for druids is Wildshape, a magical transformation that lends a druid the appearance and capabilities of a wild beast. Wildshape is the main focus of the changes OneDnD will make to the Druid’s repertoire, giving it a unique new ability.
How Will Wildshape Change?
- Where Wildshaping previously took an action, it will now only require a bonus action. This allows you to Wildshape and attack in the same turn.
- Previously, Wildshape could only be used twice per rest. Now, the maximum number of uses changes with user level (2 at level 2, 3 at level 6, and 4 at level 17).
- The new rules allow you to regain a Wildshape by taking a short rest, and at level five you can switch out a spell slot for an extra Wildshape. Additionally, when you reach level 20, you will always have the use of Wildshape at the start of combat.
- The old rules gave you the HP of whichever beast you’d transformed into. Under the new rules, you’ll instead gain temporary HP equal to your druid level. While this seems worse, it does mean that your transformation isn’t broken when you run out of health.
- At level 7, you gain the ability to deal elemental damage while Wildshaped.
- You can expend one use of Wildshape to cast Find Familiar, which allows you to gain a helpful companion.
Changes to Circle of the Moon
Circle of the Moon is one of the most-played Druid subclasses in DnD. It focuses on empowering your Wildshape transformations to make you more of a threat in combat. This subclass has received a full rework, and should now be much more in line with the power level of other classes. One of the biggest changes from OneDnD can be found here, and everything you need is listed below:
- Subclasses are now all gained at level 3, instead of a variable level based on class.
- Moon Druids get AC in beast form equal to 13+WIS modifier unless the beast’s normal AC is higher.
- When you transform as a Moon Druid, you get three times your level as temporary HP, giving you a whole lot of bulk to work with.
- Starting at level 3, Moon Druids can cast their circle spells while transformed. This is a major change from before, where level 18 was required before any spells could be cast while transformed.
- You can transform into a beast with a maximum CR equal to one-third of your druid level. This is the main draw of the subclass and lets you turn into a bear as early as level 3.
- At level 6, you can deal radiant damage. This gets around most damage immunity your enemies might have.
- At level 10, you gain the ability to teleport 30 feet. This replaces the ability to Wildshape into elementals and should grant your druid much more maneuverability.
- At level 14, you get a massive 2d10 damage boost to your Wildshaped attacks. Altogether, this turns your druid into a melee tank that can take and dish out damage with ease.
