Chronological Order for All 13 Assassin’s Creed Games

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has been going on for nearly twenty years. It has a lot of games, and it has a main series and a spin-off. The main series has 13 Assassin’s Creed games, each important to the overall story being told. We’re awaiting the arrival of the 14th installment, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. If you want to catch up on the series, here is the main franchise game order.

Main Assassin’s Creed Series

Creed began in 2007 with the first game aptly titled Assassin’s Creed. The game followed a man named Desmond Miles, who was kidnapped by a company called Abstergo and forced to participate in a process that would allow him to live through his ancestors’ lives using his DNA. The machine used to do this was called the Animus and is used throughout the series. In the game, we follow Desmond’s experience with Abstergo and the life of his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad. Many of the Creed games follow this format.

While not all of these characters are followed or mentioned throughout the rest of the games, most of them are intertwined in some way, normally because they’re members of the Assassin Brotherhood. The rest of the main series goes as follows. Assassin’s Creed II (2009), Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (2010), Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (2011), Assassin’s Creed III (2012), Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (2013), Rogue (2014), Unity (2014), Syndicate (2015),  Origins (2017), Odyssey (2018), Valhalla (2020), and Mirage (2023).

Spin-Off

Many games outside the main series are spin-offs of larger/full-sized games. While these games are in no way required if you’re only interested in the main story. They usually follow characters or storylines from main games that get further explored in the spin-offs. Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation is the spin-off to Assassin’s Creed III and follows a different character simultaneously. Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry was originally Black Flag DLC, but it was later released as a standalone game that you can purchase, and it follows Adéwalé, an essential character in the installment. Assassin’s Creed Chronicles include multiple minor Creed games following shorter storylines.

There was also a VR game released for the Meta Quest 2 called Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR, which has you as the player working at Abstergo and going through the memories of iconic Creed characters. Many more minor mobile/handheld console games were released. These games have no bearing on the series and were often watered down for the sake of being portable. Before gamers got consoles like the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and other handheld consoles, many games had to be made smaller and less capable of playing well on handheld consoles like the Nintendo DS or the PlayStation Portable.

Conclusion

This franchise is vast and well-loved by many fans. Even though many have had issues with the direction of the franchise lately and the delay in Shadows, it’s still a franchise that prevails. Between the stealth and RPG elements, the profound lore attached, and the memorable characters, it’s no secret why so many hold Creed near and dear to their hearts. If you haven’t picked up a Creed game yet, it’s never too late to start this epic series that shows no signs of stopping or slowing down.
