Gamescom is filled with amazing and exciting new trailers and news this year. A gameplay overview trailer showcasing boss designs for Path of Exile 2 was also revealed at this event. This 4-minute video had fans of the original game excited for the sequel. There is no confirmed release date but it is speculated that the game is set to release later this year. Path of Exile 2 is a free-to-play Action RPG that Grinding Gear Games are developing. It features Co-Op allowing 6 players to enter the world Wraeclast and stop the darkness within.
Origins of a Boss
The trailer featured Mark Roberts the game director of Path of Exile 2 conveying his thoughts about the gameplay and the boss design in the game. He stated that the bosses in Path of Exile 2 are designed in two different ways. The first is the traditional way, in which the narrative is designed and the bosses are designed accordingly.
The second way he mentions this is by providing the creative geniuses behind the development of the game to have total independence over what they design. The artists were given complete freedom to use their imagination to create the design of bosses that do not necessarily have to relate to the narrative of the game. He mentions that the potential here is unlimited and may result in bosses having hundreds of limbs or zero limbs, thousands of teeth and legs, or no legs.
Boss Design
The original game played a lot of role in designing the boss encounters in Path of Exile 2. The game director mentions that the hundreds if not thousands of bosses that were present in the original game, provided us with knowledge and experience, that ultimately resulted in this game. The studio tried its best to create the best possible encounters in an Action RPG environment.
There are over 100 bosses in the game, and many more have yet to come. Despite this fact, Mark was proud saying that each boss designed in the game has a unique design and moveset. Every boss is hand-animated from scratch and no boss in the game shares assets with each other.
Satisfying Bosses
Mark Roberts was quite insistent that the bosses present in the game were designed while keeping the Souls genre in mind. The studio wanted the bosses to pose a challenge to the player and are therefore utilizing Soulslike mechanics. Unlike the previous game, Path of Exile 2 requires to completely bring the boss’ health to zero. If a player can not beat a boss then they will not be able to progress through.
The director was insistent that this makes all the boss fights much more rewarding and satisfying when a player learns the moveset and strategizes their load-outs to defeat the encounter. He also said that there are no cheesy boss attacks and the studio has tried their best to telegraph each attack so that the boss fight is fair.
